ダビデの勝利

1．ダビデの征服

ストーリーは5章からの続き、再び周辺諸国を征服し、統一していくダビデの活躍が描かれます。ダビデは、敵対勢力に対して破竹の勢いで、総攻撃をかけていくのです。あげられた地名を確認していくと、それは約束の地を完全に占領していくものです。ペリシテ人は、地中海沿岸の西側（1節）、モアブ人は死海の東側（2節）、アラムは北方の民族（6節）、エドム人は死海の南と東側に住む民族（14節）です。

なお、ダビデはかつてモアブの保護を受けたことがありました。モアブ人ルツを通してモアブとの関係があったと言えます。しかしここでは、ダビデは征服した者の三分の二を殺し、残ったものを奴隷として扱い、貢物を納めさせたとあります。なぜ彼がモアブ人にこのような冷酷な扱いをしたのか、理由はよくわかっていません。ともあれ、ダビデは、イスラエルの周囲東西南北全方位に居住する強敵に勝利を得ました。これは、彼の戦果とも言えるものでしょう。また彼は政治家として有能さを発揮しました。ダマスコのアラムやエドムに守備隊を置き、継続的な支配を実現するのです。「さばきと正義を行った」（15節）とあるように、民事の解決に関わりました。サウルの統治期に、そのような記録はありません。そのような意味では、ようやくイスラエルの民は、自分たちが求める王を得たということでもあるのでしょう。ダビデは軍団長、史官、書記を任命し、いわゆる国の基本となる官僚組織と軍隊を整備しているのです。彼はいわゆる有能な王なのです。しかし、聖書はこのようなダビデの活躍を全てを主によるものであるとしていることに注意すべきです。。

2．主に委ねるダビデ

ところでこのような勝利に至るまでのダビデの半生は、何と過酷なものであったことでしょう。一介の羊飼いであったのが王に抜擢されたのも束の間、先王サウルの妬みに弄ばれる人生に迷い込んだのです。そして彼は、気が狂ったふりをして逃亡するところまで堕ちて、生き延びるためにもがく人生、なんともやるせないものでした。確かに、人は、自分自身の先が見通せない時ほど苦しく感じるものはないでしょう。自分の存在が危ぶまれるような状況において、なおもその試練の中で、真っすぐに生きていくことは実に難しいものです。大方人は、感情に流されて試練に飲み込まれ、自分をダメにしてしまうものです。王位への道を完全に断たれて、死の荒野に放り出されたダビデが、何故、ここまで、粘り強く神のお取り扱いを受け続けることができたのだろうか、と思うところですが、実際には、ただひたすら神に頼り続ける他なかった、つまり、神に望みをおかずして、生き延びることができなかったというのが現実であったのかもしれません。耐え抜いたダビデは偉いというよりは、死ぬこともできない臆病者が、ただ神にすがってもがき続けるしかない、という状況であったのではないでしょうか。つまりダビデは称賛に値する人物というよりも、まさに臆病で困惑している今の私と同じ、というわけです。

ですから、そこで諦めてしまったら、ダビデのような逆転勝利は味わえません。逆に言えば、ダビデを素晴らしい信仰の人と考え、ダビデのようにならなければならない、と考える必要もありません。むしろ、あなたが無力さのゆえに、ただ神にすがり続ける他ない、と惨めな思いでいてもそれでもよいのだ、それがダビデの置かれた状況であったというわけです。完全に諦めるか、それとも、神に完全にゆだねる形で諦めるか、いずれかの選択です。今は全く何の希望もない、と思わされることがあるなら、「わたしに求めよ。わたしは国々をあなたへのゆずりとして与える。地の果ての果てまで、あなたの所有として」（詩篇2:8）と神は語っておられるのですから、その神に求め、ゆだねる形で、自分の人生を諦めていくのも一つの道です。それは、ただ人生を投げ打つこととは違うものです。神への深い信頼のもと、神のご計画に委ねることです。この詩篇は、メシヤ預言の一つともされますが、ダビデ自らの経験を歌ったものでしょう。ですから、それは、メシヤのことを語ると同時に、私たちにも普遍化できる真理を含むのです。

このような現実に、神が何をしてくださるのかわからない、けれども、神の最善にゆだねていく、そして神を待ち続けるのです。待つことも信仰です。神がダビデにしてくださったことは、私たちにも起こりうることです。王位を回復させ、東西南北、あらゆる敵を打ち倒し、イスラエルの国の基礎を作ったダビデの勝利を、私たちのものとするために、私たちの人生を神にゆだね、今日なすべきことを淡々と進めていきたいところです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

David’s victory

1. 1. David’s Conquest

The story continues from Chapter 5, and depicts David’s success in conquering and unifying neighboring countries again. David will make a total attack against his hostile forces with the momentum of a breach. If you check the name of the place given, it will completely occupy the promised place. The Philistines are on the west side of the Mediterranean coast (ver. 1), the Moabites are on the east side of the Dead Sea (ver. 2), the Arams are on the north side (ver. 6), and the Edomites are on the south and east sides of the Dead Sea (ver. 14).

David was once protected by Moab. It can be said that there was a relationship with Moab through the Moabite Ruth. But here it is said that David killed two-thirds of the conquerors, treated the rest as slaves, and made them pay tribute. It is not clear why he treated the Moabites so ruthlessly. In any case, David won the victory over the powerful enemies who lived in all directions of north, south, east and west around Israel. This can be said to be the result of his battle. He was also a talented politician. He will set up garrison in Aram and Edom in Damascus to achieve continued control. He was involved in civil settlement, as he said, “doing what was just and right for all his people” (ver. 15). There is no such record during Saul’s reign. In that sense, it may be that the Israelites finally got the king they wanted. David has appointed a corps commander, historian, and secretary to maintain the so-called basic bureaucracy and army of the country. He is a so-called capable king. However, it should be noted that the Bible attributed all of David’s work to his Lord.

2. David entrusted to the Lord

By the way, how harsh it was for David’s half-life to reach such a victory! For a short while, he was appointed to the king as a shepherd, but he lost himself in the life of being tossed by the envy of his predecsessor, Saul. And he fell to the point of fleeing, pretending to be crazy, and struggling to survive, he couldn’t do anything about it. Certainly, no one will feel as painful as when he cannot see ahead of himself. It is really difficult to live straight in the test of the situation where your existence is in jeopardy. Most people are sentimentally swallowed by trials and ruin themselves. I wonder why David, who was completely cut off from the throne and was thrown into the wilderness of death, could continue to be treated by God so persistently. Perhaps the reality was that he had no choice but to continue to rely on God, that is, he could not survive without hope for God. Perhaps David, who endured, was not so great as a coward who could not die, but had no choice but to continue struggling with God. In other words, David is not a praiseworthy person, but just like me, who is timid and embarrassed.

So, if you give up there, you won’t be able to enjoy a come-from-behind victory like David. Conversely, you don’t have to think of David as a man of great faith and that you have to be like David. Rather, it’s okay if you feel miserable that you have no choice but to cling to God because of your powerlessness, that is the situation in which David was placed. You have the choice of giving up completely or giving up completely to God. If you think that there is no hope at all now, “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.” (Psalm 2:8) and God are saying, so it is one way to ask that God and give up on your life in the form of entrusting it. It’s not just about throwing life away. It is to entrust God’s plan with deep trust in God. This psalm, also known as one of the Messianic prophecies, is probably a singing of David’s own experience. So it speaks of the Messiah and at the same time contains truths that can be universalized to us.

I don’t know what God will do in such a reality, but I will leave it to God’s best and continue to wait for God. Waiting is also a faith. What God has done to David can happen to us as well. Leave our lives to God and do what we need to do today to restore the throne, defeat all enemies north, south, east and west, and to make David’s victory, which laid the foundations of the country of Israel, ours.
