2章　ダビデユダの王となる

1．サウルからダビデへ

サウル亡き後、ダビデは神に自分がどうすべきかを問いました。自分はユダに戻るべきなのか、そうではないのか。そして神のみこころに従って、ダビデはペリシテ人の領地ツィケラグから引き揚げ、ユダのヘブロンへと戻っていくのです。ダビデはユダの王として迎えられました。

続いてダビデは、ヤベシュ・ギルアデの人々に使者を送っています。ダビデは、彼らがサウルと息子たちの遺骸を取り戻して、丁寧に埋葬したことに感謝の意を表明したのです。しかしヤベシュ・ギルアデの人々は、そこで即座に、サウルからダビデになびいて、王として担ぎ上げることはしませんでした。ダビデは、ユダの王とはなっても、とんとんとイスラエル全体を掌握する王とは、なりえなかったわけです。

実際、サウル軍の司令官アブネルが、サウルの生き残りの子、イシュ・ボシェテをサウルの後継者としていました。イシュ・ボシェテは、「恥の人」を意味します。しかし、1歴代誌8:33では、エシュバアルと呼ばれています。それは、「主の人」を意味することばです。彼はマハナイムで全イスラエルの王と宣言されました。こうしてイスラエルには、二人の王が対峙する事態が生じました。他方サウルを殺したペリシテ人は、遥か北東のベテ・シャンにまでその勢力を伸ばしました。イスラエルの国力は分断し、ペリシテ人がますます勢力を伸ばしてイスラエルを脅かす、イスラエルにとっては国家存亡の危機的状態でした。

2．アブネルの解決

そこで、サウル軍のアブネルが動き出しました。彼は、ダビデの軍の将軍ヨアブに申し入れ、いわゆる一対一で戦う勝ち抜き戦を提案し、イスラエルを一つにしようと考えたのです。イスラエルを代表するのはサウル亡き後も、サウル軍の方であった、ということです。しかし形勢は、やがてダビデの軍が優勢となり、ダビデが王となる道筋が整えられていきます。私たちがことさら画策せずとも、神が少しずつ時代の歯車を動かし、あらかじめ計画されたとおりに事が運んでいくのです。

もし時間があったら、聖書地図を取り出し、イシュ・ボシェテの軍とダビデの軍がそれぞれ拠点とした場所をチェックしておいてください。イシュ・ボシェテの軍は、ヨルダン川を渡ってマハナイムに戻りました。そこは、かつて族長のヤコブがラバンから逃れ、兄エサウに会う前に、御使いの軍勢に出会った場所です（創世記32:2）。イスラエルにとっては歴史的に意義のある町でしたが、イシュ・ボシェテは、ペリシテの勢力の強い、ヨルダン川西岸の地を捨て、さらにユダと距離を置いたのです。そしてダビデはヘブロンに移動、つまりペリシテとイシュ・ボシェテの軍の間に距離を保とうとしました。ヘブロンは、族長たちの埋葬地であり、ユダの都市の中でも最も重要な町です。当時の微妙な力関係を思わせる配置です。

さて注目すべきは、サウルの将軍アブネルがダビデの将軍ヨアブに呼びかけたことばです「いつまでも剣が人を食い尽くしてよいものか。その果ては、ひどいことになるのを知らないのか」実に、人が憎しみを向けあうことほど無駄なものはありません。しかし、その無駄なことに力を傾けてしまうのが人間です。人間が集まるところに衝突はつきものです。教会も例外ではありません。新約聖書において、使徒パウロはガラテヤの教会に対してこう語りました。「気をつけなさい。互いに、かみつき合ったり、食い合ったりしているなら、互いの間で滅ぼされてしまいます。」（ガラテヤ5:13-15）。

本来、神のみこころは明らかであるのに、人は、自らの損得に囚われ、神のみこころに目をつぶってしまうことがあるものでしょう。なすべき正しいことがわかっていながら、逆のことを続けてしまうことがあるものです。初めは、サウルのダビデに対する個人的な妬みが問題を引き起こしていました。しかし、今や、サウルが作り上げた国家システムによって利益を得る人々が、その利益を守ろうとしてイスラエル全体に悲劇をもたらしているのです。国家のリーダーたちの個人的な利益追求が、国家を危機に陥れる、実に最悪な事態が生じていました。

このような時に覚えるべきは、やはり人間が造られた者に過ぎないこと、人の上に人はおらず、ただ正しいことをなさる神がおられること、その神の下に皆が遜り、なすべき正しいことを確認しあうことなのでしょう。人はやはり罪人というべきです。不毛な争いを避けて、ただ愛と正義の神のみこころがなされるように、神に従いながら、国をまとめていく、そんなリーダーが求められていると言えます。

Chapter 2 Become King of David Judah

1. From Saul to David

After Saul’s death, David asked God what he should do. Should he return to Judah or not? And according to God’s will, David withdrew from the Philistine territory of Zikelag and returned to Hebron in Judah. David was greeted as King of Judah.

David then sent a messenger to the people of Jabesh-Gilead. David thanked them for recovering the remains of Saul and his sons and politely burying them. But the people of Jabesh-Gilead did not immediately fly from Saul to David and carry him up as king. Even though David became the king of Judah, he could not be the king who took control of Israel as a whole.

In fact, Saul’s commander Abner had Saul’s surviving son, Ish-Bosheth, as Saul’s successor. Ish-Bosheth means “shameful person”. However, in 1 Chronicles 8:33, he is called Esh-Baal. It is a word that means “the person of the Lord.” He was declared King of All Israel in Mahanaim. Thus, Israel had a situation in which two kings faced each other. On the other hand, the Philistines who killed Saul extended their power to Beth Shan, far northeast. Israel’s national power was divided, and the Philistines became more and more powerful and threatened Israel, which was a crisis for Israel to survive.

2. Abnel’s solution

There, Abner of the Saul army started to move. He offered to Joab, the army general of David, to propose a so-called one-on-one win-win battle, and decided to unite Israel. It is said that the representative of Israel was the Saul army even after the death of Saul. However, the situation is that David’s army will soon become dominant, and the path for David to become king will be prepared. Even if we don’t plan anything, God will move the cogs of the times little by little, and things will be carried out as planned in advance.

If you have time, take out the Bible map and check where Ish-Bosheth’s army and David’s army were based. Ish-Bosheth’s army crossed the Jordan River and returned to Mahanaim. It is where his patriarch Jacob once fled Laban and met his army before meeting his brother Esau (Genesis 32: 2). Although a historically significant city for Israel, Ish-Bosheth abandoned the west bank of the Philistine-powered West Bank and moved further away from Judah. David then moved to Hebron, trying to keep a distance between the Philistine and Ish-bosheth armies. Hebron is the burial place of the chieftains and the most important city in the city of Judah. The arrangement is reminiscent of the delicate power relationships of the time.

Now, it should be noted that General Abner of Saul called to General Joab of David, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? ” Nothing is more wasteful than directing hatred. However, it is human beings who devote themselves to the wasteful things. Collisions are common where humans gather. The church is no exception. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul told the Galatian church: “If you bite and devour each other, wat ch out or you will be destroyed by each other” (Galatians 5: 13-15).

Originally, the will of God is clear, but people may be trapped in their own profits and losses and close their eyes to the will of God. Sometimes you know the right thing to do, but you keep doing the opposite. Initially, Saul’s personal envy of David caused problems. But now, those who benefit from the national system that Saul has created are causing tragedy throughout Israel in an attempt to protect those interests. The personal pursuit of the interests of the nation’s leaders has brought about the worst of the nation’s crisis.

What we should remember at such times is that human beings are nothing more than created, that there is no man above man, but that there is a God who does the right thing, and that everyone is humbly under that God. It will be to confirm each other what is right to do. A person should still be a sinner. It can be said that there is a need for a leader who can unite the nation while following God, avoiding barren conflicts and just doing the will of the God of love and justice.
