1．背景
38 篇同様、ダビデは、死を間近に感じる病の中にありました。ただこの詩篇は、37篇で教訓とされた待ち望むことを、実践する難しさを告白するものです。具体的に、束の間の人生にある人間を、なぜ神は執拗に懲らしめられるのかでしょう。それはヨブの訴えに通じるものです（ヨブ7:16-17）。つまり、愛の神を信じるからこそ、神に対して心を正直に打ち明ける内容でもあるのです。聖書的な原則を理解していても、そのとおりにはなかなか生きることができない、何ともできの悪い信仰者、しかしそれが私たちの現実です。そこでダビデはどうしたのか、見てまいりましょう。
まずダビデは、舌で罪を犯さないようにと努力したと言います。ダビデもヨブ記を読み、ヨブの失敗を覚えていたはずです。そして、苦しみの中にあっては、ただ神を待ち望むことが、最善の過ごし方であるとわかっていたはずです（38篇）。けれども苦しみが長引けば、神の御心がわからなくなり、彼も、神をなじる者になってしまう、神に恨み、つらみをぶつけてしまう、同じ状況に陥っているのです。神は、私のことなど忘れ去っている、私など、どうでもよい存在なのだ、といじけてしまう。ヨブも、「私たちは幸いを神から受けるのだから、わざわいをも受けなければならない」と最初こそ立派でしたが（ヨブ2:10）、やがて言葉に過ぎて、神の前に高ぶる罪を犯してしまっています。
ですから、苦難にあって神を待ち望む、スマートな時を過ごすためには、まずは言葉に気を付けること、神の前に不平をもらさず、呟かずにいることです。それは、すべては神の御手の中で起こっているという、私たちの神に対する信頼を示すものなのです。神の権威を認め、神を信頼していることを証ししているのです。主イエスの模範を思い起こし、イエスの足跡に従い、余計なことを言わず、神のめぐみを忍耐強く待ち望むことが大切です。
2．はかないいのちで悔いる虚しさ
また詩篇38篇は、友人や敵たちの冷酷さのゆえにダビデは待ち望む難しさを感じていました。この39篇では、詩人がそのような試練にさらされたのは人間のはかなさを思い始めたため、内側からの揺さぶりのためです。5節ダビデは「あなたは、私の日数を手幅ほどにされました。あなたの御前では、私の一生はないも同然です」と言います。つまり、自己憐憫の落とし穴です。自分をあわれみ、かわいそうに思い、被害者意識を強めてしまう。そのような落とし穴に落ち込んで、神を責め、不信仰に陥ってしまうことがあるものです。弱さにあって罪を思い出させられるのなら、悔い改める他はありません。ダビデは自らの罪を認めて言います。「私のすべての背きから、私を助け出してください。」（8節）そしてさらにこう加えています。「あなたは、不義を責めて人を懲らしめ、シミが食うように人の欲するものをなくされます。実に、人はみな空しいものです。」（11節）神は罪を罰せられると言いますが、そんなのはもうたくさんだと思うこともあるでしょう。神の責めに耐えきれないことがあるのです。後悔しているのか？と聞かれれば、人生後悔の連続である。もう、何年も何十年も自分の愚かさは忘れたことはないし、できることならば、時間を逆戻りさせて、罪を犯した愚かな若造である自分の側に行ってそんなことは止めろと言ってあげたい。けれども過去は取り戻せない。残り少ない命を抱えながら、失敗したと思う人生を抱えて打ちしおれている老人がいるだけ、自らの衰えを感じながら、こんな後悔が後どれほど続くのだろうか、と疲れ切っている（10節）。ダビデの独白は、心打つものがあります。
3．朗らかになれるように
このような救いがたい絶望感の中で、解決を見出すとしたら、それは敢えて神のあわれみを請うことでしょう。12節「主よ、私の祈りを聞いてください。助けを求める叫びに、耳を傾けてください。私の涙に、黙っていないでください。…私が朗らかになれるようにしてください。私が去って、いなくなる前に」（12-13節）。たとえ人生はもう残り少ないと思わされる中でも、またこんな年寄りに何の楽しみがあろうか、と思うことがあっても、神が必ず、私の心を晴れやかにしてくださる、と信頼し、祈り続けるのです。というのも注目しましょう。39篇の12節「主よ、私の祈りを聞いてください。助けを求める叫びに、耳を傾けてください」は、次の40篇の1節「私は切に、主を待ち望んだ。主は私に耳を傾け、助けを求める叫びを聞いてくださった」に対応しています。39篇はこれで終わらず、40篇の勝利の歌に続くのです。どこまでも神を信頼し、神のあわれみにすがる、神のあわれみを待ち望み続ける、これが信仰者です。人生諦めないことです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 39: The Pain of Waiting
1. background
As in Psalm 38, David was in the throes of an illness that made him feel close to death. However, this Psalm confesses the difficulty of putting into practice the lesson of waiting that was taught in Psalm 37. Specifically, why would God be so relentless in chastening a man who is in the midst of a fleeting life? It goes along with Job’s complaint (Job 7:16-17). In other words, it is also the content of honestly confiding our hearts to God because we believe in a God of love. We are all bad believers who understand biblical principles but have a hard time living up to them, but that is our reality. So let us see what David did.
First, David says that he tried hard not to sin with his tongue. David must have also read the book of Job and remembered Job’s failure. He must have known that the best thing to do in the midst of suffering is to simply wait on God (Ps. 38). But the longer he suffers, the more he loses sight of God’s will, and he, too, finds himself in the same situation of becoming God’s scapegoat, taking out his bitterness and resentment on God. God has forgotten about me, and I am nothing to Him. Job, too, was admirable at first, saying, “Since we receive from God good things, we must also receive evil things” (Job 2:10), but he eventually went too far with his words and sinned in his exaltation before God.
Therefore, in order to have a smart time of waiting on God in affliction, we must first be careful with our words, and not grumble or murmur before God. It shows our trust in God that God is counting all things in His hands. It is a testimony that we recognize God’s authority and trust in Him. It is important to remember the example of the Lord Jesus, to follow in His footsteps, to say nothing superfluous, and to wait patiently for God’s blessings.
2. the emptiness of repenting for a fleeting life
In Psalm 38, David also felt the difficulty of waiting because of the ruthlessness of his friends and enemies. In this 39th Psalm, the psalmist was subjected to such trials because he began to contemplate the transience of mankind and was shaken from within: in verse 5 David says, “You have made my days as wide as my hand; you have made my days as short as my hand. In your presence, my whole life is as if it were nothing.” In other words, this is the pitfall of self-pity. Pitying ourselves, feeling sorry for ourselves, and becoming more and more victimized. It is possible to fall into such a pit, blame God, and fall into unbelief. If we are reminded of our sins in our weakness, we have no choice but to repent. David admits his sin and says, “From all my transgressions I have sinned. Deliver me from all my transgressions” (v. 8). (v. 8) And then he adds, “You have condemned iniquity. You chasten men for their iniquities; you make them lose what they desire, as a flea eats its own flesh. Indeed, all men are empty.” (v. 11) God says He punishes sin, but sometimes we think we’ve had enough of that. Sometimes we can’t stand God’s condemnation. Are you repentant? If you ask me, I have a lot of regrets in my life. I have not forgotten my foolishness for years and decades now, and if I could, I would go back in time and go to my side, the foolish young man who sinned, and tell him to stop doing such things. But the past cannot be undone. There is only an old man who is devastated with the little life he has left, with a life he thinks he has failed, feeling his own decline, exhausted, wondering how much longer such regret will last (v. 10). David’s monologue is heartbreaking.
3. to be cheerful
If we were to find a solution in the midst of such irredeemable despair, it would be to dare to ask for God’s mercy. v. 12 “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear to my cry for help. Listen to my cry for help. Do not be silent in my tears. …Help me to be cheerful. Before I leave and am gone” (vv. 12-13). Even when life seems so short, even when I wonder what fun I can have in my old age, I continue to pray, trusting that God will surely make my heart cheerful. Notice, too, that in Psalm 39, verse 12: “Hear my prayer, O Lord, and hear my cry for help. Listen to my cry for help.” The next verse in Psalm 40, verse 1, “I have earnestly waited for the Lord. Psalm 39 does not end there, but continues with the song of victory in Psalm 40. This is the believer who trusts in God, who hangs on to God’s mercy, who waits and longs for God’s mercy. This is what a believer is all about: not giving up on life. I pray that today will be another good day.
