1．イスラエルに脅威を抱くモアブの王バラク（22:1-4）
まず登場するのはモアブの王バラクです。彼は、イスラエルがシホンとオグを征服したことに強い恐れを抱きました。シホンとオグは非常に強力な勢力でした。そんな彼らを打ち破ったイスラエルの民が、モアブに迫って来た、これに脅威を感じないわけがありません。
バラクは、対抗策としてミディアンの遊牧民に助けを求めました。しかし、それだけでは十分でないことを理解します。そこで彼が頼ったのが「占い師バラム」です。「力では勝てない。では神の呪いによって彼らを打ち破ることができるのではないか」と考えたわけです。
2．招かれた占い師バラム（22:5-35）
次に登場するのはバラム。彼は、ユーフラテス川のほとりに住む占い師（22：5）で、新約聖書にも登場する人物です。2ペテロ2:15やユダ11節では、金銭を愛する俗人的な預言者として描かれています。実際、民数記22章でも、彼は、バラクからの高額の報酬に心を動かされて、イスラエルを呪うために行動を共にすることになります。
ここで重要なのは、バラムが一見神に従っているように見えながらも、実際にはその心が揺れ動いていたという点です。神が彼に「イスラエルの民を呪ってはならない」と告げたにもかかわらず、彼はその忠誠を売る機会を探していたのです。
道中、神の使いが抜き身の剣を持って彼の進路を阻みます（22:22）。しかし霊的に盲目になっていたバラムはその存在に気づきません。その一方で、彼が乗っていたロバは、神の使いを目にし、恐れを示します。そして驚くべきことに、このロバが口を利き始めるのです。ロバが彼に向かって問いかけ、バラムは自分の霊的な盲目さに気づかされていきます。
この場面が伝えるのは、神の主権と力が人間の理解を超えた方法で示されることです。また、バラムの霊的な盲目さは、彼自身の内面を象徴していると言えるでしょう。
3．歓迎されるバラム（22:36-40）
バラムがモアブに到着すると、バラクは彼を大いに歓迎します。バラクは当然、バラムがイスラエルを呪うことで自分の国を守ってくれると期待していました。しかし、ここで転機が訪れます。バラムは神の戒めを受け、呪いではなく祝福を語る決意を固めたのです。ここから私たちは二つの教訓を学ぶことができます。
預言者の使命は、神のことばを純粋に伝えることです。使徒パウロも「神のことばに混ぜ物をせず純粋に伝える」ことの重要性を語っています（2コリント2:17）。私たちも、利益や人の承認を求めるのではなくて、神の言葉を忠実に語る姿勢を持つべきです。
バラクは、バラムを利用して呪いを試みましたが、神はその企みを逆転させました。詩篇109篇にはこうあります。「彼らは呪います。しかし、あなたは祝福してくださいます」（109：28）人の陰謀や攻撃があったとしても、神はそれを祝福へと変える力を持つお方です。
そのような意味で、21章からは、イスラエルに対抗する様々な民族の動きに神がどのように介入してくださったかを見ていくことになります。イスラエルの周りをどのような敵が囲み、呪いをかけようとも、神は、その呪いを祝福に、恥を栄誉に換えてくださることを確認することになります。神はご自身を信じる者、従う者にも同じようにしてくださいます。たとえ人々が陰謀を企てようとも、神には呪いを祝福に変える力があるのです。ですから、人間の呪いを恐れないことです。そして状況や失敗によって、あるいは他人のことばによって、何か呪われていると感じることがあっても、それらは、私たちの信じる神によって祝福に変わると考えましょう。神の祝福は、信じる者に留まらず、周囲にも広がる豊かなものなのです（創世記12章）。では今日もよい一日を。また明日も、この続きを読んでまいりましょう。
Numbers 22: The Pagan Prophet Balaam and His Meeting with God
In Numbers 22, we see an unusual story involving three main characters: Balak, the king of Moab; Balaam, a pagan prophet; and God’s intervention. Through this story, we see how God protects Israel and brings blessings even in difficult situations. Let’s take a closer look.
- Balak’s Fear of Israel (22:1-4)
First, we meet Balak, the king of Moab. He is terrified because Israel has defeated two powerful kings—Sihon and Og. These were strong forces, and the fact that Israel won shows their strength. Now, Israel is heading toward Moab, and Balak feels threatened.
Balak tries to find help from the nomadic Midianites, but he realizes it’s not enough. So, he turns to Balaam, a prophet known for his powers. Balak thinks, “If I cannot defeat them with strength, maybe I can defeat them with a curse.” - Balaam, the Prophet Who Loved Wealth (22:5-35)
Next, we meet Balaam. He is a prophet from the region near the Euphrates River (22:5) and is also mentioned in the New Testament. In 2 Peter 2:15 and Jude 11, Balaam is described as a greedy man who loved money more than God. This matches what we see in Numbers 22—Balaam is tempted by the high payment Balak offers him to curse Israel.
At first, Balaam listens to God and refuses to go with Balak’s messengers (22:12). But when Balak sends more messengers with greater rewards, Balaam’s heart is swayed, and he decides to go with them.
During the journey, God sends an angel with a sword to block Balaam’s way (22:22). Balaam, spiritually blind, cannot see the angel. But his donkey sees the angel and stops. Balaam becomes angry and hits the donkey, but then the unexpected happens—the donkey speaks. The donkey questions Balaam, and suddenly Balaam’s eyes are opened. He sees the angel and realizes that God is trying to warn him.
This part of the story shows God’s power and how He can use even the most unusual ways—like a talking donkey—to reveal truth. It also highlights Balaam’s spiritual blindness and his inner struggle. - Balaam’s Welcome by Balak (22:36-40)
When Balaam arrives in Moab, Balak welcomes him with great enthusiasm. Balak hopes Balaam will curse Israel and protect Moab. But Balaam has changed. After his encounter with God, he decides to obey Him and speak blessings instead of curses.
Here, we learn two important lessons:
A. Be Faithful to God’s Word
A prophet’s job is to deliver God’s message without change. The Apostle Paul also emphasizes the importance of sharing God’s word purely and faithfully (2 Corinthians 2:17). As believers, we should focus on God’s truth rather than seeking approval or personal gain.
B. Do Not Fear Curses
Balak wanted to use curses against Israel, but God turned those curses into blessings. Psalm 109:28 says, “They curse, but You bless.” This reminds us that no human plan or attack can overpower God’s blessing.
Conclusion: God’s Power to Transform Curses into Blessings
Numbers 22 is a powerful story showing God’s protection and His ability to change curses into blessings. Even when others try to harm us, God has the power to reverse their plans and bring good into our lives.
The blessings of God are not limited to us alone—they spread to those around us (Genesis 12:3). No matter the challenge, we can trust that God will fulfill His promises and turn even the hardest situations into blessings.
