ついに神が沈黙を破られました。しかし神は単刀直入にヨブの問いに答えるのではなく、質問を繰り返されています。ヨブに考えさせて、気づきを与えようとしているようです。38章では、ヨブの視野を遥かに超えた時空間のことが語られています。そして39章ではヨブの目にも確認できる周辺の自然界のことが語られています。
1．あなたは、私と一緒に創造の業に携わったのか（37:1-12）
ヨブは自分の義を主張し、神に返答を求めました。しかし、神は、そのようなヨブを摂理を暗くする者だ、と言います（2節）。ヨブに対する取扱いが不当なものに思われても、彼は神を信頼すべきであった、と言うのです。そして神は語られます「あなた勇士のように腰に帯を締めよ」（3節）つまり、「わたしはあなたの機嫌を取ることはしない。心して聞け」ということでしょう。神は、エリフの語ったことをなぞるかのように、ご自身の広い世界で何が起こっているかを語っていくのです。それは、自然の驚異と神の守りについて、神のみわざを認めさせようとするものでした。神は、そもそもあなたはわたしと一緒に世界を作ったのかと質問されます（4節）。誰がこの世界の寸法を定め、配置を計画し、秩序を定めたのか。誰がこの地の基礎を築いたのか（5-6節）と。
神のことばは続きます。海が生まれた時に（8節）、この生まれたての海が干上がらないように、またその海が地を覆い尽くさないように境界を定めたのは、このわたしだ。あなたはわたしと一緒にこの仕事をやってのけたとでも言うのか。もちろん、そんなことがあるわけがない。それならば、どうしてあなたは、一切があなたのために調整されるようにと要求するのか、と言うのです。
2．あなたは、光に命じたことがあるのか（38:12-15）
あなたは、朝に命じて太陽が昇るように仕向けることができるのか（12節）。暗闇に紛れて、悪しき行為を行う者を一層させるよう、光に命じたことがあるのか（13節）。太陽は昇る。そしてすべての闇は、葬り去られる。悪しき者の運命も同じである（15節）。
3．あなたは、宇宙を見渡すことができるのか（38:16-21）
ヨブよ、あなたは、海の深みも理解していないだろう。その深淵を歩き回ったこともないだろう（16節）。死の世界にも行ったことはないはずだ（17節）。それなのになぜ死後の世界にまで口を出すのか。実際に目に見えるこの大地についても、その広さをあなたはどこまで知っているのか。あなたの知力は本当に限られているのではないか（18節）。
ここでヨブは光と暗闇を分け、その秩序を保っている神のみわざを知りもせず、そこに一緒に参画し、神と対等に物事を動かしているわけではなく、物事を動かせるように述べる立場にもない現実を、神から教え諭されているのです（19-21節）。
4．あなたは、四季の移り変わりを調節し、制御しているのか（38:22-30）
ヨブよ、あなたは雪や雹、東風や大水、稲光を、本当は誰が調節し、制御しているか分かっているはずだ（22-28）それは人間のためだけでなく、人の住まない荒れ地であっても起こるように計画されている。四季の移り変わりは、あなたの個人的な利益を超えたものである。
5．あなたは、天体を治めているのか（38:31-38）
そうだ、空を見上げるがいい。人は星それぞれに名前をつけてきたが、その星を造ったのは誰だろうか（31節）。あなたは、その中の一つでも、たとえば牡牛座を引き出すことができるのか（32節）。天の法則はわたしが決め、その秩序をあらかじめ定めたのだ。その時、あなたは一緒にそこにいたというのか（33節）。あなたの知らないところで、地が乾燥し、人間の手に負えなくなった時に、心を配り雨を降らせるのは、わたしである（37-38節）。あなたは、いつも自分の営みに忙しく、地の片隅に住む動物など頭にないかもしれない。だが、わたしはこの地上に住むすべてのいのちを支え、保っている（39-41）。それは創造主としてのわたしの営みだ。天地創造の神の前に、私たち人間は、いかに小さな存在であるかを教えられる一章です。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 38: The Greatness and Care of God’s Creation
At last God breaks His silence. But instead of answering Job’s question in a straightforward manner, God repeats the question. He seems to be trying to make Job think and realize: in chapter 38 we are told of a time and space far beyond Job’s thinking. And in chapter 39, we are told of the surrounding natural world that Job can see.
1. did you engage in the work of creation with me (37:1-12)
Job claimed his righteousness and asked God for a response. But God says that such Job is a darkener of providence (v. 2). He says that he should have trusted God, even if his treatment of Job seemed unjust. Then God says, “Buckle up like a valiant man” (v. 3), which means, “I will not be pleased with you, but you will be pleased with me. Listen with your heart. God goes on to tell us what is going on in His wider world, as if to trace what Elihu has told us. It was about the wonders of nature and God’s protection, and it was about getting people to recognize God’s work. God asks the question, Did He make the world with you in the first place (v. 4)? Who set the dimensions of this world, planned its arrangement, and established order? Who laid the foundations of the earth (vv. 5-6)?
God’s words continue. When the sea was born (v. 8), it was I who set the boundaries so that this newborn sea would not dry up and so that it would not cover the earth. Are you saying that you have done this work with Me? Of course, there is no such thing. Why, then, do you demand that everything be adjusted for you?
2. have you ever commanded the light (37:12-15)?
Have you commanded the morning to cause the sun to rise (v. 12)? Have you ever commanded the light to make one layer of those who do evil deeds under the cover of darkness (v. 13)? The sun shall rise. And all darkness will be buried. The fate of the wicked is the same (v. 15).
3. canst thou look out over the universe (38:16-21)?
Job, you do not even understand the depths of the sea. You have never walked through its depths (v. 16). You have never even been to the world of death (v. 17). So why even mention the afterlife? How much do you know about the extent of this earth that you can actually see? Is not your intelligence truly limited (v. 18)?
Here Job is being admonished by God about the reality that he does not know God’s work of separating light from darkness and maintaining order in the world, nor does he participate in it with God, nor is he in an equal position with God to move things, nor is he in a position to say what he can do to move things (vv. 19-21).
4. are you regulating and controlling the changing of the seasons (38:22-30)
Job, you know who really regulates and controls the snow and hail, the east wind, the great waters, and the lightning (vv. 22-28), which are planned to occur not only for man but also in the uninhabited wastelands. The changing of the seasons is beyond your personal interests.
5. do you rule over the celestial bodies (38:31-38)
Yes, look up at the sky. People have given names to each of the stars, but who created them (v. 31)? Can you bring out even one of them, Taurus, for example (v. 32)? The laws of the heavens I have determined, and I have predestined their order (v. 33). You say that you were there with them at that time (v. 33). It is I who take care and send rain when the earth becomes dry and beyond human control without your knowledge (vv. 37-38). You may be so busy with your own activities that you do not think about the animals living in the corners of the earth. But I sustain and preserve all life on earth (vv. 39-41). That is my activity as Creator. This chapter teaches us how small we human beings are before God, the Creator of heaven and earth. I pray that today will be another good day.
