1．パリサイ人、サドカイ人の教えに注意する（16:1-12）
イエスに向けられる宗教家たちの目は、日増しに厳しいものとなりました。彼らはイエスを訴える口実を見つけようとし始めました。既に12:38においてもパリサイ人たちは、イエスがメシヤである証拠を求めましたが、再び同じ問いを発しています。そしてイエスもまた同じ答え、つまり、ヨナのしるし以外のしるしはないと答えています。またイエスが現れて、イエスのことばに耳を傾け、その働きを見ていればわかるだろうに、と語り、宗教家たちの霊的な鈍さを指摘します。そして6節、イエスは、弟子たちに、あのような宗教家たちに惑わされてはならない、と警告します。
2．あなたは生ける神の子キリスト（16:13-20）
確かにイエスについては、様々な受け止め方がなされていました。悪魔だと言う人もいれば、頭がおかしくなったのだと考える者もありました。いやいや、やはり旧約聖書に預言された通りのメシヤだ、と認める人もいました。イエスは、ことばの端々に、自分がメシヤであることをそれとなく語っているのですが、人々は結論を出しかねていました。それは、イエスに直接従っていた弟子たちも同じでした。
そんなある日、イエスは、単刀直入に、あなたがたは、私のことをどう考えているのか、と弟子たちに尋ねられたのです。すると使徒ペテロが16節、「あなたは生ける神の子キリストです」、つまり旧約に預言されたとおりのメシヤだと告白しました。そしてそれがあらゆる回答の中で唯一正しい答えであった、とマタイは読者に語り掛けています。
さらにマタイは、このペテロの告白が、神によるものであったことに注意を向けています。しばしば人は、様々な宗教の中で、自分が一番良いと思うものを選んで、信仰を持つ、と考えがちです。しかし人が神を信じるのは、人の熱心な探求の結果によるだけのものではないのです。神がおられることに気づかせていただく、神のあわれみがあってこそ信仰に至るのです。またそのような遜った心と、神を仰ぐ信仰のある所に、神は教会を建ててくださるのです。教会が建てあがることも神の恵みの結果です。そうであればこそ、「よみの門もそれに打ち勝つことができない」つまり、激しい迫害の嵐の中を潜り抜けてもなお世に生き残り続けていく教会も建てられるのです。自分たちの良識や能力、力で建てられたと誇るような教会は、教会員の老いと共に潰れるのが落ちでしょう。信仰は神の恵み無くして成り立たないものです。
3．神の使命に生きる十字架の歩み（16:21-28）
ともあれこの告白をきっかけとして、21節、イエスは、ご自分の使命が十字架にあることを明確に語っていかれます。そしてイエスに従う弟子たちにもそれぞれ負うべき十字架、いわば神の使命があることを語ります。25節「わたしのためにいのちを失う」つまり神の使命を意識して、神と共に歩む人生は、全世界を手に入れる以上に価値あることだ、と言います。神の報いは豊かだからです。
どうでしょう。神を信じたと言いながら、神とはおおよそ無関係に信仰生活をしているということはあるものでしょう。自分のやりたいことの思いが強くて、祈らない、聖書も読まない、教会も自分の都合に合わせていく、そういうことはないでしょうか。あるいは、一見教会の働きに熱心、しかしそれは、一般社会で出来ない自己実現を教会でやろうとしている、というだけのことはないでしょうか。それも神とはおおよそ無関係な人生です。もし、そうならば、イエスが言う、全世界を手に入れる以上に価値ある人生を生きているわけではないのです。本当に、神のいのちに喜ぶ、神の祝福に与る生涯を歩みたいものです。信仰に生きるというのは、宗教的な人生を生きる上のものです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。
Matthew 16: Signs of Jesus
1. beware of the teachings of the Pharisees and Sadducees (16:1-12)
The eyes of the religious leaders on Jesus became more and more severe day by day. They began to try to find an excuse to sue Jesus. Already in 12:38, the Pharisees had asked for proof that Jesus was the Messiah, and they asked the same question again. And Jesus gave the same answer, that there is no sign other than the sign of Jonah. Jesus appears again, telling them that they would have known if they had listened to His words and watched His work, and pointing out the spiritual dullness of the religious people. Then, in verse 6, Jesus warns his disciples not to be deceived by such religious people.
2. you are the Christ, the Son of the living God (16:13-20)
Certainly, there were many different ways of perceiving Jesus. Some said he was the devil, others thought he had lost his mind. Others recognized that He was, after all, the Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament. Although Jesus was saying in every word that He was the Messiah, people were not ready to come to a conclusion. The same was true for the disciples who were directly following Jesus.
One day, Jesus asked them straightforwardly, “What do you think about me? Then the apostle Peter confessed in verse 16, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” that is, the Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament. Matthew tells his readers that this was the only correct answer among all the answers.
Matthew further notes that Peter’s confession was by God. Often people tend to think that among the various religions, they choose the one they think is best and have faith in it. But a person’s belief in God is not solely due to the result of one’s diligent search. One comes to faith only because of God’s mercy, which makes us aware of God’s presence. And where there is such a reverent heart and faith that looks up to God, God will build His church. The building up of the church is also a result of God’s grace. It is precisely because of this that the church will be built, “not even the gates of darkness can prevail against it,” that is, the church that survives in the world even after going through the storms of violent persecution. Churches that boast that they were built by their own good sense, ability, and strength will fall down with the aging of their members. Faith cannot exist without God’s grace.
3. walk of the cross in the mission of God (16:21-28)
At any rate, with this confession as a starting point, in verse 21, Jesus speaks clearly about His mission being the cross. He then tells the disciples who follow Him that each of them has a cross to bear, a divine mission, so to speak. v. 25 “Lose your life for my sake,” that is, to be conscious of God’s mission, and that a life spent walking with Him is worth more than having the whole world. For God’s rewards are abundant.
What do you think? I am sure that there are people who say they believe in God, but live their lives of faith without much connection to God. Do you ever find that you are so focused on what you want to do that you don’t pray, don’t read the Bible, or attend church according to your own convenience? Or, perhaps they are enthusiastic about the work of the church at first glance, but they are simply trying to achieve self-fulfillment in the church that they are unable to do in the general society. That, too, is a life that has little to do with God. If so, then they are not living a life worth more than what Jesus said about getting the whole world. We really want to live a life of rejoicing in God’s life and in God’s blessing. Living by faith is above living a religious life. I wish you a good day today.
