1．エジプトの追跡（14:1-14）
昨日もお話したように、エジプトからカナンへ行く道は「海の道」と「王の道」につながる「シュルの道」そして「巡礼者の道」と三つありました。彼らは、バアル・ツェフォンという場所で一旦宿営するように命じられていましたから、そこからどの道を進んでいくのか、思いを漂わせながら、次の命令を待っていたと思われます。
そうこうしているうちに、気を取り直したファラオがエジプトの軍勢に命じて、イスラエルを取り戻そうと追いかけてきました。もはやイスラエルを失うことの損失に気づいた彼らは、ファラオも家臣も一致して行動したわけです。奴隷のイスラエル人はまさに彼らの所有物だったのです。何かハリウッド映画の脱出劇を見るような思いですが、イスラエルの民は、エジプトの国境まで逃れてきていながら、もはやこれまでという事態に陥っていたのです。助けを求めるイスラエル人に、神は「恐れてはいけない。主の救いを見なさい」と語ります。
しかし、それほど生易しい状況ではありませんでした。イスラエルの民は、パニック状態に陥り、ただ恐怖に叫び続けるばかりでした。このようなプレッシャーの中でも冷静にイスラエルの民に信仰に立つように勧めるモーセが印象的です。モーセは言いました。このような時にこそ、神の業を仰ぐ時ではないか！と。確かに絶体絶命と思われる時にこそ必要なのが信仰です。神はモーセに言いました「なぜあなたは私に向かって叫ぶのか」「助けるから前進せよ」と。この箇所は、ヘブル語本文の問題があり、本来は、神は民の叫びに対して応じたのに、モーセに語ったかのような、不自然な結びつきの本文が伝えられてきてしまった箇所だと言われているところです。
ともあれここには、信仰によって歩むことがどんなことかを語るものがあります。イスラエル人は言いました。「エジプトに墓がないからといって、荒野で死なせるために、あなたはわれわれを連れてきたのか。あなたは私たちを連れてきて、この荒野で死なせるのですか」モーセにとっては実に不本意な言いがかりです。しかし、イスラエルの民にとっては、相当のパニックでした。しかしそのような時にこそ「恐れてはいけない。主の救いを見なさい」と語る神に寄り縋る時です。一度深呼吸をして、神の御言葉をゆっくり思いめぐらし、心を落ち着かせ、信仰によって踏み出す腹を決め、実際にできることを始めていくことが信仰なのだ、と語っているのです。14節「主があなたがたのために戦われるのだ。」と言います。この主の約束のことばを受け止めて、その信仰を表明する歩みをする、そこに神の奇跡の業が生じるのです。
2．主の救い（14:15-21）
事実、彼らはモーセと共に、道なきところに足を一歩踏み出し、前進することで、実に不思議なことが起こりました。それまで先導していた神の使いがしんがりとなり、エジプトの軍隊は、神の使いの介入により、イスラエルに追いつけなかったというのです。しかも、エジプトの軍隊が、イスラエルを追って海の中を進んでいくのですが、イスラエルが海を渡り終えた瞬間、エジプトの軍隊は海の中にそのまま沈められてしまった、というのです。イスラエルはエジプトの所有ではなく、神の所有である。神がこの世界を支配しておられるという結末でした。
ところで彼らが、実際に徒歩で渡った海はどこなのかについて諸説があります。ナイル川河口のメンザレ湖周辺、淡水のティムサ湖、そして当時はスエズ湾につながっていた苦湖などです。いずれにせよ、彼らが渡った「海の真ん中」は、紅海そのものではなく、紅海の南スエズ湾先端にある苦湖であった可能性が高いとされます。
ともあれ神はここで大いなることをなさいました。信じるべき神は、天地創造の神、天地万物の支配者である神です。商売繁盛、家内安全、学業成就と物事を分業している神ではなく、すべてを支配し、動かすことのできる全能の神を信じましょう、と言うのです。
そして、信じる時には、中途半端にではなく、しっかりと腹をくくり、眼前に広がる海に向かって一歩を踏み出し、道なきところにすら道ができる信仰を持つことです。信仰者は、常識を欠いてはいけませんが、常識を超えた視野を持った人です。そうであればこそ、行き詰まった時代を切り開く気概をもった頼られる人にもなるのです。キリスト者が世の光、地の塩というのは、そういうことです。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。では、また明日、このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Chapter 14: Israel’s Salvation Against the Egyptian Pursuit
- the pursuit of Egypt (14:1-14)
As I mentioned yesterday, there were three roads leading from Egypt to Canaan: “the way of the sea,” “the way of Shur,” which leads to “the way of the king,” and “the way of the pilgrims. They were ordered to camp once at a place called Baal Tzephon, so it is assumed that they waited for the next order, wondering which road they would take from there.
In the meantime, Pharaoh, who had regained his composure, ordered the Egyptian army to pursue them in an attempt to regain Israel. No longer realizing the loss of Israel, both Pharaoh and his vassals acted in unison. The slave Israelites were their very property. It was like something out of a Hollywood movie, but the Israelites, having escaped to the borders of Egypt, had come to the end of their tether. To the Israelites seeking help, God tells them, “Do not be afraid. See the salvation of the Lord.
But the situation was not that simple. The Israelites were in a state of panic and just kept screaming in fear. It is impressive that even under such pressure, Moses calmly encourages the Israelites to stand in faith. Moses said, “It is precisely in times like these that we need to be prepared for the work of God. It is in times like these that we should look up to God’s work! Moses said. Indeed, it is faith that is needed in times of seeming desperation. God said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? This is the part where it is said that there is a problem with the Hebrew text and that the text has been handed down with an unnatural connection, as if God had spoken to Moses when He originally responded to the cries of the people.
At any rate, there is something here that speaks of what it means to walk by faith. The Israelites said. Have you brought us here to die in the wilderness because there are no graves in Egypt? You brought us here to die in the wilderness? For Moses, it was an unwilling accusation. For the Israelites, however, it was a time of considerable panic. But it was precisely at such times that God said, “Do not be afraid. It is time to lean on God who says, “Do not be afraid, but look to the salvation of the Lord. He is telling them that it is faith to take a deep breath, slowly ponder God’s Word, calm their hearts, make up their minds to step out in faith, and begin to do what they can actually do. v. 14 “For the Lord will fight for you.” He says, “He will fight for you. Accepting this word of the Lord’s promise and taking steps to express that faith is where God’s miraculous work occurs. - the salvation of the Lord (14:15-21)
In fact, as they stepped forward with Moses into a place where there was no path, something truly wondrous happened. The angel of God, who had been leading the way, became a guide, and the Egyptian army was unable to catch up with Israel because of the intervention of the angel of God. Moreover, the Egyptian army followed Israel through the sea, but the moment Israel finished crossing the sea, the Egyptian army was drowned in the sea. Israel is not owned by Egypt, but by God. It was the end result that God is in control of this world.
By the way, there are various theories as to where they actually crossed the sea on foot. There are several theories as to where they actually crossed the sea on foot, including the area around Lake Menzare at the mouth of the Nile River, the freshwater Lake Timsah, and the Bitter Lakes, which at that time were connected to the Gulf of Suez. In any case, it is highly likely that the “middle of the sea” they crossed was not the Red Sea itself, but the Bitter Lakes at the southern tip of the Gulf of Suez.
In any case, God did great things here. The God we should believe in is the God of creation, the God who is the ruler of heaven and earth and all things. He says that we should believe in the Almighty God who controls and moves all things, not in a God who divides things into separate divisions, such as business prosperity, family safety, and academic achievement.
And when we believe, we should not do so half-heartedly, but with a firm stomach, taking a step toward the ocean that stretches out before us, and having faith that even where there is no path, there can be a way. A person of faith must not lack common sense, but must have a vision beyond common sense. If so, he or she will also be someone who can be relied upon to have the spirit to open up the way in times of deadlock.
