1．背景
表題にある「エドトン」は39篇にも出て来る名です。おそらくダビデが公式の礼拝を導く者として任命した楽長の一人のことであるとされています（1歴代16:41）。
ダビデは告白します「私のたましいは黙って、ただ神を待ち望む。私の救いは神から来る。（2節）」いつもその心が神に向かうダビデ。望みえない時には、神にも心が開かない。ダメなものはダメだと心が折れてしまうことがあるものです。後ろ向きの心はなかなかひっくり返せない。人間の性質が根本的に違うのでしょうか。いや、そうではないのです。そうした心の転換も主に与えられ、主に養われていくものなのです。
この歳になって思うことは、人生に問題は山積み、悲しいことも多々あるものの、不思議にも、神に対する賛美、感謝もまた多くあることです。
この詩は、おそらくアブサロム反逆の時に書かれたものだろうと考えられています。ダビデの王位が揺らぐことで、周囲に様々な形でごたごたが起こって来るわけです。「おまえたちは、いつまで一人の人を襲うのか」（3節）。ダビデを王位から引きずり降ろそうとする者たち、ダビデに代わる新たな権力を主張する者たちが動き回る。そして、ダビデのこれまでの功績など、誰にも思い起こされずに、ダビデを擁護しようとする者もいない。孤立無援の状況。ダビデに加勢してくれる者もいないわけではないものの、それは上っ面で、「口では祝福し、心では呪う」（4節）という、実に寒々として関係に、とめどもなく心が堕ちていくばかり。ダビデはもはや崩壊寸前の城壁のごとしです。降伏も秒読み段階に入り、何もかもが終わってしまいそうな状況。しかしそのようにたましいが砕け散り、肉の自分に死んで、神の力以外に自分を救う者は無し、と心低くされるのであればこそ、「私のたましいは黙って、ただ神を待ち望む。私の救いは神から来る」という気持ちにもなるのです。そうであればこそ「私の救いと栄光は、ただ神にある。」（7節）「民よ、どんなときにも神に信頼せよ。あなた方の心を、神の御前に注ぎだせ」（8節）という信仰に至るのです。
2．人の子らは空しい
「低い者はただ空しく、高い者も偽りだ」（9節）。新共同訳では、「人の子らは空しいもの。人の子らは欺もの」です。原文は、それぞれ「ベネー・アダム」「ベネー・イーシ」となっていて、ベネーは「息子」アダムとイーシはどちらも「人」を意味する類義語です。ですから新共同訳のように、いずれも「人の子」と訳してもかまわないのですが、この二つは、類義語でありながら意味の幅が違います。敢えて言えば、アダムはより一般的で、包括的に人を捉える用語、イーシは個人的、具体的に捉える用語です。そこから一般的で凡庸な人を意味する「低い者」、特定の著名人のような注目される「高い者」という訳が出てきたのではないでしょうか。ただ、NEB（New English Bible）の英訳にもあるように、「すべての人」をまとめて言う詩的言い回しと考えた方がよいのではないか、と思うところもあります。どんな人も空しい。たとえ価値あるように見えるあの特定の人であっても、秤にかければ神の前には価値がない、ということです。
ですからたとえ、自分の周囲を囲む状況がどうなろうとも、そのことは気に掛ける必要もない、というのが、裏にあるメッセージです。そこで10節、人間的な不正な手段により頼むな、となるのです。思い切った意訳ですが新共同訳の「力が力を生むことに心を奪われるな」は、個人的にはよく理解できます。勝ち組が、ますます能力ある人々を集めて勢いづくようなイメージです。直訳は「繁栄に心を留めるな」ですが、確かに、自分が打ち破れそうな時には、敵はますます勢いづいていくように見えるもので、悔しい思いをさせられることもあるでしょう。そして、一層、自分もワルになって、奴らと同じように、不正な手段で出し抜けるものなら出し抜きたいと思うこともあるでしょう。しかしダビデは、たとえ状況が不利であっても、そのようなことに心を奪われるな、と言うのです。
信仰者の生き方というのは、たとえ結果は同じように見えても、どのようにそれをするか、という価値意識の差に表れてきます。神の前に誠実に生きる人間は、あのような悪者と同じようなやり方はしない、ということです。私たちが寄り頼むのは、富でも能力でもなく、正義の神、誠実な神ご自身です。キリスト者として、誇りを失うことのない、生き方というものがあるのです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Psalm 62: Don’t Think I’ll Be a Badass, Too
1. background
The title “Edton” is a name that also appears in Psalm 39. It probably refers to one of the music directors whom David appointed to lead the official worship service (1 Chronicles 16:41).
David confesses, “My soul is silent, waiting only for God. My salvation comes from God (v. 2). （David’s heart always turns to God (v. 2). When we cannot hope, our hearts are not open to God either. Sometimes a heart can be broken when things are not good enough. A backward heart is hard to turn over. Part of me wonders if human nature is fundamentally different between David and me. But it is not so. Such a change of heart is also given to the Lord and nurtured by Him.
At my age, I realize that although life is full of problems and sadness, strangely enough, there is also much praise and thanksgiving to God.
This poem was probably written at the time of Absalom’s rebellion. David’s throne was shaken, and all sorts of messes were coming up around him. How long will you attack one man” (v. 3)? Those who want to remove David from the throne and those who claim new power to replace David move around. And no one is reminded of David’s past achievements, and no one tries to defend David. An isolated situation. Although there are those who support David, it is only on the surface, and his heart is constantly falling into the cold relationship between “blessing with the mouth and cursing with the heart” (v. 4). David is like a wall on the verge of collapse. He is on the verge of surrender, and everything seems to be coming to an end. However, if his soul is shattered and he is dead to his fleshly self, and his heart is lowered to the idea that there is no one to save him but the power of God, then it is precisely because of this that he says, “My soul is silent and waits only for God. My salvation comes from God. Only then can we say, “My salvation and my glory are in God alone.” (v. 7) “Trust in God at all times, O people. Pour out your hearts before God” (v. 8).
2. the sons of men are empty
Verse 9: “The lowly are only empty, and the high are false. The New Community Translation says, “The sons of men are empty. The sons of men are deceitful”. The original text has “benay adam” and “benay yeshi,” respectively, with benay being a synonym for “son” and adam and yeshi both meaning “man. Therefore, as in the New Common Translation, it is acceptable to translate both as “son of man,” but the two are synonyms with different ranges of meaning. I dare say that Adam is a more general and inclusive term that captures a person, while Yesh is a more personal and specific term. From there, the translation may have been “low one,” meaning a general, ordinary person, and “high one,” a high-profile person, such as a particular celebrity. However, as the English translation of the NEB (New English Bible) says, there is a part of me that thinks it would be better to think of it as a poetic phrase that says “every man” collectively. Every person is empty. Even that particular person who seems worthy is worthless before God when weighed in the scales.
So even if the circumstances surrounding you are not, there is no need to care about them, is the underlying message. Verse 10 then says, “Do not ask by human and dishonest means. It’s a drastic and mean translation, but I personally understand the New Common Translation, “Don’t lose heart that power begets power.” It is an image of a winning team gaining momentum by attracting more and more capable people. The literal translation is “Do not lose heart in prosperity,” but it is true that when you seem to be on the verge of defeat, your enemies seem to gain more and more momentum, which can be frustrating. And you may feel frustrated because your enemies seem to be getting stronger and stronger when you are about to defeat them. But David tells us not to let such things get to our hearts, even if the situation is unfavorable.
The way a believer lives his or her life, even if the outcome looks the same, is expressed in the difference in value consciousness of how he or she does it. It means that people who live faithfully before God do not do it in the same way as those evil people. It is not wealth or ability that we lean on, but the God of justice, the God of integrity Himself. As Christians, there is a way of life in which we can never lose our pride. I pray that today will be another good day.
