14章　アサの信仰

1．アサに与えられた安息

アビヤに代わってアサが王となりました。アサの統治期間は10年、主は平穏無事な時代を守られたので、アサは防備の町々を築くことができました。イスラエルを侵略しようとする者はいなかったのです（6節）。アサは、それが「私たちが私たちの神、主を求めたからである。」（7節）と言います。大切なのは、自分の弱さを認めて、神を求めることでしょう。神を求める以外に、生きるすべのない自分を素直に認めていくことです。

具体的にそれは、アサにとって「異教の祭壇と高き所を取り除き、柱を砕き、アシェラ像を打ちこわ」（3節）すことでした。また、「ユダに命じて、彼らの父祖の神、主を求めさせ」ることにありました。自ら従うだけではない。王として自国の民に、主を求めるように指導するのです。何か、国力増強のために成果を出せ、というわけではありません。ただ国民一人一人が主を求めて生きることを教えていくのです。彼は指導者として、ただ今日も主に祈ろうではないか、と掛け声をかけ、そのとおりに行動しました。

2．アサの試み

そんな神への忠誠を試すかのように、アサに対抗してアサの倍の軍隊を動かすクシュ人ゼラフが現れます。クシュは、東アフリカのエチオピアやスーダンに位置する国です。当時エジプトはスーダンの一部を支配していたとされ、おそらく、エジプトの後押しを受けたアラビヤの侵略者たちであったのでしょう。その数、ユダが58万、対して侵略者のクシュ人は、100万プラス300台の戦車を整えていました。またしても、父アビヤの戦いに匹敵する（ユダ40万、その敵ヤロブアムの軍隊80万）倍近い敵を相手にする勝ち目のない戦争を強いられたのです。安定した時代に築いた防備の町々も、踏みにじられて、エルサレムに攻め込まれる、そのような脅威の中で、アサが語ったことばに注目しましょう。「主よ。力の強い者を助けるのも、力のない者を助けるのも、あなたには変わりはありません。私たちの神、主よ。私たちを助けてください。私たちはあなたに拠り頼み、御名によってこの大軍に向かって来ました。主よ。あなたは私たちの神です。人間が、あなたに力を行使することのないようにしてください。」（11節）。

ネヘミヤ的に言えば「彼らを恐れてはならない。大いなる恐るべき主を覚え、自分たちの兄弟、息子、娘、妻、また家のために戦いなさい」（ネヘミヤ4:14）というところでしょう。この書の最初の読者、捕囚帰還民はもちろん、現代の私たちにも大いなる励ましです。

力の強い、ないは、私たちには問題ですが、神には全く問題ではありません。神の力を信頼するとは、そういうことです。まず人間は自分たちが優勢であるか劣性であるかを考えます。しかし、神にそんなことはおかまいなしです。神は、無から有を生じせせる全能の神です、その方を信じるのです。つまり信仰を持つというのは、神の可能性にかけることに他なりません。だからこそ、望みなきところに望みを抱く、大どんでん返しを期待しうるのです。神など信じて何になるだろう、というのは、無力な自分に目を向けているからです。自分に味方する者が少ないことを気にかけているからです。自分が持てるもの、持たぬものに、心を囚われ過ぎているのです。自分ではない、神に目を向けなおしてみましょう。そして、「主よ。私たちを助けてください」と素直に、心から主に叫び求めましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 14 Asa’s Faith

1．Rest given to Asa

Asa became king in place of Abijah. Asa’s reign lasted ten years, and the Lord kept peace and order so that Asa could build fortified cities. No enemy tried to invade Israel (v. 6). Asa says it is “because we sought the Lord our God” (v. 7). The important thing is to admit your weakness and seek God. It is to honestly admit that you have no choice but to seek God.

Specifically for Asa, it was to “remove the pagan altars and high places, break the pillars, and smash the Asherah” (v. 3). He also “commanded Judah to seek the Lord, the God of their fathers.” He doesn’t just obey himself. As king, he directs his people to seek his lord. It doesn’t mean that he will produce results for the sake of strengthening the national power. He teaches each and every citizen to seek the Lord and live. As a leader, he urged his subjects to pray to the Lord today, and he did so.

2．Asa’s attempt

As if to test his loyalty to God, Zeraf the Kushite appears against Asa with an army twice as large as Asa’s. Kush is a country located in Ethiopia and Sudan in East Africa. Egypt was said to be controlling part of Sudan at the time, and they were probably Arabian invaders with the backing of Egypt. Their number, Judah’s, was 580,000, while the invaders, the Kushites, had one million plus 300 chariots in order. Once again, he was forced to fight an unwinnable war against an enemy twice as many as his father Abijah (400,000 for Judah and 800,000 for his enemy Jeroboam’s army). Let us pay attention to the words spoken by Asa in the midst of such a threat that the fortified cities that had been built during the stable times will be trampled and attacked by Jerusalem. “Lord, you are the same whether you help the strong or the weak. Help us, Lord our God. We rely on you. I begged and came against this great army in your name, Lord, you are our God.

In Nehemiah’s terms, it would be, “Do not fear them. Remember the Lord, great and terrible, and fight for your brothers, sons, daughters, wives, and houses” (Nehemiah 4:14). It is a great encouragement not only to the original readers of this book, the exiled returnees, but also to us today.

Powerful or not is a problem for us, but not at all for God. That’s what it means to trust God’s power. First, humans consider whether they are superior or recessive. But God doesn’t care. Believe in God, the Almighty God who can create something out of nothing. In other words, having faith is nothing but betting on the possibility of God. That’s why we can expect great twists and turns, where there is hope in hopelessness. What is the use of believing in God? For he cares that he has few allies. He is too preoccupied with what he has and what he doesn’t have. Let’s turn our attention to God, not ourselves. Then, let’s cry out to the Lord honestly and sincerely, “Lord, please help us.” I hope you have a good day today.
