24章 ヨアシュの信仰
1．ヨアシュの信仰の特徴
「ヨアシュは、祭司エホヤダの生きている間は、主の目にかなうことを行った」とあります。ヨアシュの信仰の要約です。つまりヨアシュは、人に依存した信仰を持っていました。神ではなく、神に熱心な人に支えられる信仰で、主体的な、自発的なものではありませんでした。そして、人の影響次第では、神に反逆すらしてしまう信仰でした。
24章前半は、そのような人に依存した信仰が良い方向に動いた時期を記録しています。ヨアシュは祭司エホヤダとレビ人を呼びつけ、主の宮を新しくするように命じています。宗教改革の後、バアル礼拝の場として用いられた神殿は荒れ果てたままであったのです。宗教的純粋性を誇るユダの民が、王の命令を喜んだことは言うまでもありません。主の宮のために多くの献金がささげられ、神殿は修復されました。エホヤダに影響されたヨアシュ王のリーダーシップは、よき方向に動きました。
しかし、エホヤダ亡き後、ヨアシュの生き方は180度方向転換してしまうのです。王はユダの首長たちの声に耳を傾けるようになります。それで、ユダの首長たちが、アシェラと偶像に仕えるようになると、ヨアシュもそれに倣ってしまいました。そしてついには、神から遣わされ、真の神に立ち返るようにメッセージを語るエホヤダの子、ゼカリヤを殺してしまうのです。聖書は、彼が「エホヤダが自分に尽くしてくれたまことを心に留めず」（22節）と、彼の罪を明らかにします。そのために、神はユダの大軍勢を少人数で現れたアラムの軍勢に渡されました。ヨアシュのリーダーシップは、悪い方向に向いた時期でした。
人に依存した信仰は、依存相手の良しあしに左右されます。ヨアシュはエホヤダに依存し、ユダの首長たちにも依存しました。自ら神に結び付かない、依存的な信仰は、結局振り子のように揺れる人生を歩むだけです。
2．人に依存した信仰
人ではない、つまり、親、伴侶、牧師、あるいは、気に入った信仰図書の著者でもない、ただ神にしっかり結びついていく信仰が大切にされなくてはなりません。危ないのは、聖書を読まないクリスチャン、聖書よりも聖書について書かれた信仰図書ばかりを読んで燃やされているクリスチャンです。しかし聖書を読んでいればよい、というわけでもありません。聖書を読むことと聖書を通して神に語られ、養われていることには違いがあるのです。大切なのは聖書を通して神としっかり結びついて養われることです。そして、神のことばに聞き従う信仰者であることです。
歴代誌の読者が、この書を読んで、どのような悔い改めを促されたのかを考えたいところです。彼らの悔い改めは、日本人のそれとは違います。日本人は、生まれつき異教的な環境で生まれ育ち、聖書の神は知らないのが普通です。ですから日本人の悔い改めは、神を知らなかったことへの悔い改めです。神を認めていなかった、あるいは異教的信仰からの改宗と言うべき悔い改めです。しかし、捕囚から帰ってきたユダヤ人は、聖書の神を知らないわけではありません。そして彼らは、旧約聖書の教えにも触れていて、その通りに生きることを教えられていました。彼らの悔い改めは、形式的な信仰、生ける神を知りながら、その神としっかり結びついていないことに対するものでした。
神にしっかり結びつく信仰を持ちたいものです。その上で、人は、人に影響されることもありです。つまり、神に直接結びつくことを促す友こそ、つまりゼカリヤをこそ、私たちの真の友、私たちの永遠のいのちを守る友と見なす知恵を持つこととにしましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 24 Faith of Joash
- Characteristics of Joash’s Faith
“As long as Jehoiada the priest lived, Joash did what was right in the sight of his Lord.” A summary of Joash’s beliefs. In other words, Joash had a dependent faith. It was a faith that was supported not by God, but by people who were devoted to God, and it was not subjective or spontaneous. And depending on the influence of people, it was a faith that even rebelled against God.
The first half of Chapter 24 records the period when such a person-dependent faith moved in a positive direction. Joash summons the priest Jehoiada and the Levites to renew the house of his Lord. After the Reformation, the temple, which was used as a place of worship for Baal, remained in disrepair. It goes without saying that the people of Judah, who pride themselves on their religious purity, rejoiced at the king’s decree. Many donations were made for the house of the Lord and the temple was restored. Under the influence of Jehoiada, King Joash’s leadership moved in a positive direction.
However, after Jehoiada died, Joash’s way of life took a 180-degree turn. The king listens to the chiefs of Judah. So when the leaders of Judah began to serve Asherah and their idols, Joash followed suit. In the end, he kills Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada, who was sent by God to give him a message to return to the true God. The Bible reveals his sin when he “did not heed what Jehoiada had done for him” (v. 22). Therefore, God handed over Judah’s large army to the Aramaean army, which appeared in small numbers. Joash’s leadership took a turn for the worse.
A faith that depends on a person depends on the good or bad of the person it depends on. Joash depended on Jehoiada and on the chiefs of Judah. Dependent faith that does not connect itself to God will only lead a life that swings like a pendulum.

Faith that is not a person, a parent, a spouse, a pastor, or the author of a favorite devotional book, but just a firm connection to God must be valued. What is dangerous is Christians who do not read the Bible, Christians who are burned for reading only faith books written about the Bible rather than the Bible. But that doesn’t mean you should just read the Bible. There is a difference between reading the Bible and being spoken to and fed by God through the Bible. The important thing is to be firmly connected and nourished with God through the Bible. And be a believer who listens to the word of God.
I would like to think about what kind of repentance the readers of Chronicles read this book. Their repentance is different from that of the Japanese. The Japanese were born and raised in a pagan environment, and it is normal for them to be ignorant of the God of the Bible. So Japanese repentance is repentance for not knowing God. It is a repentance that should be called a conversion from a pagan faith or not acknowledging God. But Jews returning from captivity are not ignorant of the God of the Bible. They also touched upon the teachings of the Old Testament and were taught to live according to them. Their repentance was for formal faith, for knowing a living God but not firmly connected to Him.
We want to have a faith that binds us to God. On top of that, people can be influenced by other people. In other words, let us have the wisdom to regard Zechariah as our true friend, the friend who protects our eternal life, the friend who encourages us to connect directly with God.
