27章　ヨタム

1．ヨタムの時代

ウジヤの後を継いだのは、ヨタム。ヨタムは、神に大いに祝福された王でした。それは、「彼の神、主の前に、自分の道を確かなものとした」（6節）からであると記録されます。彼は、主に従うことを第一としました。ヨタムの生涯は、短く、その統治期間も長くはありません。しかし、救世軍と呼ばれる団体の代表山室軍平先生が「善生は長生にまさる」と語ったように、どれだけ長く生きたかではなく、どのように生きたかが大切です。ヨタムは、基本的に父ウジヤの事業を引き継ぎました。神殿を修復し（3節）、ユダの山地を開墾し、町を開発しました（4節）。さらに軍事力を強化し、アンモン人を支配し、貢物を納めさせています。ヨタムは勢力を拡大していくのです。

しかし、そのような王の姿勢とは全く釣り合わずに、国民の霊性は下降線を辿っていたことが指摘されています。2節「民は依然として滅びに向かっていた」とあります。この時代に預言活動をしたイザヤは、「反抗に反抗を重ねてなおも、どこを打たれようというのか。頭は残すところなく病み、心臓もすべて弱っている。足の裏から頭まで健全なところはなく、傷、打ち傷、生傷。」（イザヤ1:4-6）と当時の民の状況を伝えています。民は偶像礼拝に浸り、正義を捨て、我欲に生きる人生の結末に向かっていました。ユダ南王国は物質的には繁栄していましたが、その霊性は実に貧しく、痛ましいものであったのです。

2．国民への神の期待

こうして記録を読むと、ユダ南王国の繁栄が守られたのは、ヨタム王一人の霊性によるかのように思われます。ヨタム王に免じて、神がイスラエルの国を守られた、と。しかし、そうではありません。

少し遡って、25章からの流れから振り返ると、イスラエルの国を再生する主要な役回りがあることに注目されます。25章は国王と預言者、26章は国王と祭司、そしてこの27章は国王と民の組み合わせをもって、イスラエルの歴史が綴られているのです。つまり、預言者（25章）、祭司（26章）によって、宗教的な純粋性への警鐘が鳴らされ、国王が神の前にいかに生きるかが語られてきた。しかし、国家を形作るのは、国王のみではない。27章では、民もまた主の前に自分の道を確にし、神にしっかり心を向けるように促されているのです。つまり、国王も、民も一丸となって神の前に生き、国を再建することが促されるための記録と言うべきでしょう。

7-9節は結びの定型文となっています。ヨタムは、正常な形で葬られたことが記されています。これは、ヨタムの正しさを認めることばです。

ともあれ捕囚帰還後、この書の読者が教えられたことは、王が神の前に自分の道を正した、と言うのであれば、その臣下である自分たちも同じように、というメッセージでした。教会も同じことを考える必要があります。牧師、伝道師だけが神に献身しておればよいというわけではありません。教会を構成する信徒一人一人も自分たちの責任において、神の前に自分たちの道を確かにしていくことが期待されています。確かに、現代の世は、必ずしも、クリスチャンに味方をしてくれるものではありません。私たちが信仰に生きようとするなら、その意気をくじき、足を引っ張ることばかりです。しかしそのような中であえて、地の塩、世の光としての生き方を選びとっていく、その姿勢を神が祝し、道を整えてくれることを、信頼して歩みたいものです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 27 Jotham

1. Age of Jotham

The one who succeeded Uzziah was Jotham. Jotham was a king greatly blessed by God. It is recorded as having “made his way sure before the Lord his God” (verse 6). His first priority was to obey the Lord. Jotham’s life is short, and his reign is not long. However, as Gunpei Yamamuro, the representative of an organization called the Salvation Army, said, “A good life is better than a long life.” It is not how long you live, but how you live that is important. Jotham basically took over his father Uzziah’s business. He restored the temple (v. 3), cleared the mountains of Judah, and developed the city (v. 4). In addition, he strengthened his military power, controlled the Ammonites, and forced them to pay tribute. Jotham expands his power.

However, it has been pointed out that the spirituality of the people was on the decline, completely out of proportion to the king’s attitude. Verse 2 says, “The people continued their corrupt practice.” Isaiah, who prophetically acted during this period, said, “Ah, sinful nation, a people loaded with guilt, a brood of evildoers, children given to corruption! Why should you be beaten any more? Why do you persist in rebellion? Your whole head is injured, your whole heart afflicted. From the sole of your foot to the top of your head there is no soundness only wounds and bruises and open sores, not cleansed or bandaged or soothed with oil. ” (Isaiah 1:4-6) tells the situation of the people at that time. The people were immersed in idolatry, abandoning justice, and heading towards the end of a life of selfishness. The Southern Kingdom of Judah was prosperous materially, but spiritually it was very poor and miserable.

2.Expectations of God for the People

Reading the record in this way, it seems that the prosperity of the southern kingdom of Judah was protected by the spirituality of King Jotham alone. For the sake of King Jotham, God has protected the nation of Israel. But it’s not.

Going back a bit and looking back from chapter 25, it is noted that it has a major role to play in regenerating the nation of Israel. Chapter 25 is the king and the prophets, chapter 26 is the king and the priests, and chapter 27 is the combination of the king and the people, and the history of Israel is spelled out. In other words, prophets (chapter 25) and priests (chapter 26) have sounded alarm bells for religious purity and told how kings should live before God. But it is not only the king who forms the nation. In chapter 27, the people are also urged to make their way before the Lord and to set their hearts firmly on God. In other words, it should be said that it is a record to encourage the king and the people to live together before God and rebuild the country.

Sections 7-9 are fixed phrases for closing. Jotham is said to have been properly buried. This is Jotham’s righteousness.

In any event, after returning from captivity, the readers of this book were taught that if the  king had made his way before God, so too were his subjects. it was a message. The church should think the same way. It is not enough for pastors and evangelists to be dedicated to God. Each member of the church is expected to make sure of their own way before God on their own responsibility. Certainly, the modern world does not always take sides with Christians. If we try to live by faith, it will only discourage us and drag us down. However, in such a situation, I dare to choose a way of life as the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
