23章　アタルヤの顛末

1．祭司エホヤダの決断

アタルヤの恐怖政治が深まる中、祭司エホヤダが、奮い立ちます。彼は、ダビデ王家に忠誠を持つ軍の指揮官たち、また、ユダの全ての町々からのレビ人を集め、彼らを核に、反アタルヤ勢力を結集するのです。エホヤダは「主がダビデの子孫について約束されたように、王の子が王となる」（3節）と宣言しました。しかし、これは単なるダビデ王家再興を目指す謀反ではありませんでした。それは、宗教的な意図を持った、王と民が主の民としての歩みを回復するための戦いであったのです。

ですからエホヤダは、この謀反に加わる者に、「彼らが主の民となるという契約を結ばせ」（16節）るのです。そして徹底して、異教礼拝を排除していきます（17節）。また「モーセの律法に記されているとおりに、主の全焼のささげ物を献げる」ようにレビ人を主の宮に配属します（18節）。聖俗の区別を明確にするため、彼は門衛を立て、こうして主の民の国としての秩序を再興していくのです。

またヨアシュの即位式においては「さとしの書」が王に与えられていますが（11節）、それは、王位の証書ではなく、シナイ契約にかかわる十戒、律法を記した書き物でした。新たに立てられた王は、神の戒めの書を与えられて、この神の戒めの書を民に守らせる、ユダ南王国の伝統を守る務めを担うのです。こうしてエホヤダは、民が、主への従順の回復へ向けて結束を促すのです。

2．自らを強くする

ここで祭司エホヤダが、奮い立ったことに注目しましょう。ヘブル語ではヒスハッザク、文字通りの意味は「自らを強くした」です。これは歴代誌に繰り返し出てくる、鍵ことばです。このような祭司エホヤダの試みが、捕囚後、壊滅状態にあったイスラエルを再興し、礼拝を建て直す困難に直面していた当時の読者に、どのようなインパクトを与えたのかを考えたいところです。つまり、彼らもまた「自らを強くし」奮い立つことを促されたはずだからです。

萎えた心、後ろ向きな心、意気地のない心では戦えません。結局、全てを善きに導いてくださる神に信頼し、未知の将来を主にゆだねて自らを奮い立たせることができるかどうか、これが、困難を乗り越えるカギです。人の冷たさや意地悪、あるいは無関心に負けてはいけないのです。誰かが奮い立って、神のみこころに身を投じることがなければ、改革も進まないことでしょう。

しかも主のしもべが奮い立つのは、自己目的のためではありません。主の契約を呼び覚まし、主の秩序を回復させるためです。となれば、必要な助けも人材もすべては、そのように主の秩序を待ち望む人たちによって得られるのです。教会形成において大切なことは、主の従順を願う人々を目覚めさせることです。自分について来る人を起こすのではなくて、主の召しに目覚める人々を起こし、主についていくことを促すことです。そうして初めて、礼拝も教会の秩序も回復されていくのです。明瞭に主のことばを語り、主のことばへの結束を促すことこそ、教会のリーダーシップが果たすべきことでしょう。主の御言葉に対する応答が、大事にされるべきことです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 23 The story of Atalya

1. The decision of Jehoiada the priest

As the reign of terror in Atalya deepens, the priest Jehoiada becomes roused. He will gather military commanders who are loyal to the royal family of David, and Levites from all the cities of Judah, and will rally the anti-Athalian forces around them. Jehoiada proclaimed, “As the Lord promised to the descendants of David, so shall the son of the king be king” (v. 3). However, this was not just a rebellion aimed at restoring the Davidic royal family. It was a battle of religious intent between the king and the people to restore the footsteps of the Lord’s people.

Therefore, Jehoiada makes those who participate in this rebellion “make a covenant that they will be the people of the Lord” (v. 16). And he will thoroughly eliminate pagan worship (v. 17). He also assigns the Levites to the house of the Lord to “offer the burnt offering of the Lord according to the law of Moses” (v. 18). In order to clarify the distinction between the sacred and the profane, he will set up a gatekeeper and thus restore order as the nation of the Lord’s people.

Also, at the enthronement ceremony of Joash, the “book of testimonies” was given to the king (verse 11), but it was not a deed to the throne, but a book containing the ten commandments and laws related to the Sinai covenant. The newly-established king is given the book of God’s commandments and is responsible for keeping the tradition of the southern kingdom of Judah, making the people obey this book of God’s commandments. Thus Jehoiada urges the people to unite in the restoration of obedience to the Lord.

2. strengthen oneself

Let us note here that Jehoiada the priest was agitated. In Hebrew, Hisshadzak, literally means “strengthened himself.” This is a key phrase that appears repeatedly in Chronicles. I would like to consider what kind of impact the priest Jehoiada’s attempt had on the readers at the time, who were facing difficulties in reviving Israel, which had been destroyed after the captivity, and rebuilding worship. . In other words, they should have been urged to “strengthen themselves” and rise up.

You can’t fight with a withered heart, a negative heart, or a timid heart. In the end, the key to overcoming difficulties is whether you can trust God, who guides you in all things for good, and be able to entrust yourself to the unknown future and inspire yourself. Don’t give in to people’s coldness, meanness, or indifference. Unless someone rises up and commits himself to God’s will, there will be no reform.

Moreover, the Lord’s servants are not motivated for their own purposes. To awaken the Lord’s covenant and restore His order. Then, all necessary help and personnel can be obtained by those who wait for the order of the Lord. The important thing in church formation is to awaken those who desire the obedience of the Lord. It is not to wake up those who follow you, but to wake up those who are awakened to the call of the Lord and encourage them to follow Him. Only then will worship and order in the church be restored. Clearly speaking the word of the Lord and promoting solidarity with the word of the Lord is what the leadership of the church should do.
