18章　誤った同盟

1．ヨシャファテの同盟

ヨシャファテは富栄えるようになると、イスラエル北王国の王アハブに近付き、縁を結びました。つまり、ヨシャファテの息子ヨラムとアハブの娘アタルヤの結婚を成立させるのです。この縁結びは、「キリストとべリアルとに、何の調和があるでしょうか。信者と不信者とに、何のかかわりがあるでしょう」（2コリント6:15）という、釣り合わぬくびきを負わせる結果となっていきます。そして、ユダ南王国の存立を脅かしていくのです（2列王8:18、2歴代21:6）。

既に11章で私たちは、神が、イスラエルを南と北に分離させ、ユダ南王国の宗教的純潔さを守られたことを学びました。しかし、ヨシャファテは、その神のご計画を台無しにするようなことをしたのです（22章）。おそらく、列王記の著者がヨシャファテを評価しなかったのは、こうした理由があったのでしょう。ユダ南王国の宗教的伝統と国家的アイデンティティを危機にさらした人物、そのような人物を詳しく書く必要もありません。

当時ヨシャファテが何を考えたのか。彼は、北と南の分裂を解消しようと、平和主義に基づいて同盟に踏み切ったと考えることもできます。しかし、同盟の相手については慎重である必要があったのでしょう。ヨシャファテは、戦争にあたって、主のことばを伺うことを当然のこととしていました。そして、与えられる主のことばはどうもヨシャファテが思うようなものではなかった、という事態に、ヨシャファテはどこか気づかねばならなかったとも言えます。ただし歴代誌の著者はこうしたヨシャファテの霊的熱心さと共に、彼の弱さもありのままに記録するのです。そこにまた著者の意図があると言うべきでしょう。

2．ヨシャファテの危機

4節、アハブが集めた預言者は、おそらくバアルとアシェラの預言者集団であったと考えられています（1列王18:19）。ヨシャファテとアハブは、ただ一人真実を語る主の預言者ミカヤのことばを退け、共に戦争に出かけました。

ただアハブは、ヨシャファテとは違い、用心深い男です。彼は、万が一のために変装して王服をつけずに出かけるのです。彼は、エリヤを通して神の言葉の確かさを感じていた人物です。ですからアハブは「ひょっとして、主のことばの通りのことが起こるかもしれない」と思っていたのでしょう。アハブが懸念したとおりに、事態は展開していきました。「ひとりの兵士が何気なく弓を放つと、イスラエルの王の胸当てと草摺の間を射抜いた」（33節）、とされます。このようなところに、私たちはあなどることのできない神の存在を思わされるのです。私たちがどのように戦略を練ろうが、どのように知略を尽くそうが、神には通用しないのです。アラムの王は、自分の配下の戦車隊長たちに命じて「兵や将校とは戦うな。ただイスラエルの王を目指して戦え」（30節）と命じました。しかし、神は、そのような戦略を用いるのでもなく、人間の気まぐれな一矢を持って、アハブの首を打ち取られたのです。私たちが思うような形で人生は進まないことが多いものでしょう。まさに、私たちの知恵よりも、目に見えぬ神の御手が、人生の決定打となることがあります。ですからヨシャパテがこの戦争で命を失いかけた時も、彼が助けを叫び求めると主が彼を助けられた、主が追っ手を離れるように仕向けられたとあります（31節）。これも実際にはありえないことでしょう。自業自得と片付けられてしまうはずのことであるのに、神は、助けを求めるヨシャファテを救い出されるのです。神のあわれみは深いものがあります。こうして考えると、先の宗教制度改革も、彼のリーダーシップで彼の発案通りに物事が進んだというよりも、神の目に見えぬ見てが、それを進めさせ、成功させたと考えられるのです。神を畏れることが全てです。神を畏れ、神のみこころのうちに歩ませていただきましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 18 Wrong Alliance

1. Alliance of Jehoshaphat

When Jehoshaphat became wealthy, he approached King Ahab of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and formed a relationship. In other words, the marriage between Jehoram, son of Jehoshaphat, and Athaliah, daughter of Ahab, was established. This marriage results in an unbalanced yoke: “What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What is there between the believer and the unbeliever?” (2 Cor. 6:15). It will be And they threaten the existence of the Southern Kingdom of Judah (2 Kings 8:18, 2 Chronicles 21:6).

Already in chapter 11 we learned that God separated Israel into north and south and preserved the religious purity of the southern kingdom of Judah. But Jehoshaphat did something that undermined God’s plan (chapter 22). Perhaps this is why the authors of Kings did not appreciate Jehoshaphat. The person who endangered the religious traditions and national identity of the Southern Kingdom of Judah need not be detailed.

What was Jehoshaphat thinking at the time? It is possible that he decided to form an alliance based on pacifism in order to resolve the division between North and South. However, it would have been necessary to be cautious about the partner of the alliance. Jehoshaphat took it upon himself to listen to his Lord in war. And it can be said that Jehoshaphat had to realize that somehow the word of the Lord that was given to him was not what he expected. However, the author of Chronicles records Jehoshaphat’s spiritual zeal as well as his weaknesses. I should say that there is also the intention of the author.

2. Jehoshaphat’s Crisis

In verse 4, it is believed that the prophets gathered by Ahab were probably the group of prophets of Baal and Asherah (1 Kings 18:19). Jehoshaphat and Ahab went to war together, rejecting the words of Micaiah, the prophet of the Lord, who was the only one who spoke the truth.

Unlike Jehoshaphat, Ahab is a cautious man. Just in case, he disguises himself and goes out without wearing royal clothes. He was the one who felt the certainty of God’s word through Elijah. Therefore, Ahab must have been thinking, “Perhaps it will happen according to the word of the Lord.” Things unfolded just as Ahab feared. “A soldier casually shot a bow, and it pierced between the breastplate of the king of Israel and the grass” (verse 33). In places like this, we are reminded of the existence of God, which cannot be underestimated. No matter how we strategize, no matter how we use our ingenuity, it will not work with God. The king of Aram ordered his chariot commanders, saying, “Don’t fight with soldiers and officers, but fight for the king of Israel” (verse 30). But instead of using such a strategy, God struck off Ahab’s head with a whimsical arrow of man. Life often doesn’t go the way we think it does. Indeed, sometimes the invisible hand of God is more decisive in life than our wisdom. So when Jehoshaphat was about to lose his life in this war, the Lord helped him when he cried out for help, and the Lord made him leave his pursuers (verse 31). This is also unlikely. It should have been dismissed as self-inflicted, but God rescued Jehoshaphat, who asked for help. God’s mercy runs deep. In this way, it can be said that the previous religious system reform was not so much that things progressed according to his ideas under his leadership, but that the unseen vision of God pushed it forward and made it successful. .
