19章　ヨシャファテの回心と改革

1．ヨシャファテの悔い改め

ユダの王ヨシャファテは、命からがら戦場から逃げ延びました。それは、全く神のあわれみによるものです（18:31）。ヨシャファテは、判断力が弱い人間で、その愚かさのゆえにほとんど死にかけたのですが、あわれみ深い神に助け出されたのです。その意味を考えましょう。つまり、神は人を選り好みするような方ではない、ということです。自業自得の状況で、滅びかけている人を救い出そうとする人はいないでしょう。しかし神はそうではないのです。それは、神が、人を正しく、ありのままに見ておられる方だからです。

先見者ハナニの子エフーが、悔い改めを勧めています。そして、ヨシャファテが間違った同盟を結んだ失敗を犯しながらも、「心を定めて常に神を求めて来た」事実があったことも、神が認めておられることを語っています。

黙示録の中で、神はエペソの教会に、「あなたには非難すべきことがある。あなたは初めの愛から離れてしまった」（2:4）と言いつつ、同時に「わたしは、あなたの行いとあなたの労苦と忍耐を知っている」（2:2,3）と語りました。つまり神は、悪い面のみならず、良い面もすべてよく見ておられるお方です。ですから、神は、人が失敗しても、その人に失敗の烙印を押して終わりにすることはありません。私たちが犯した失敗、過ちに対して、神は悔い改めを求められます。そして、よりよい歩みへと私たちを招かれるのです。神は、常に私たちの生涯全体を見ておられるお方です。ですからいつでも道を誤ったと思うようなことがあるならば、その事実を認めて、悔い改めて神に立ち返ることです。

2．主に心を定めるヨシャファテ

さて悔い改めたヨシャファテは、「ベエル・シェバからエフライムの山地に至る民の中へ出て行き、彼らをその父祖の神、主に立ち返らせた」（4節）と言います。ベエル・シェバからエフライムというのは、ヨシャファテの領地全体を指すことばです。つまり、王自らが率先して伝道者となったのです。そしてさらに、さばき人を任命しました。自分の働きを強化するために、協力者を立てるわけです。具体的に裁判専門職を整えたと言えるでしょう。ヨシャファテは、祭司アマルヤを主として宗教関係の担当責任者とし、ユダの家の長イシュマエルの子ゼバデヤを、政務関係の担当責任者としました。ある意味で、官僚制を整備し、国内政治の充実化を図ったと言えます。大切なのは、彼が単に制度的に国を整えたというのではなく、神を恐れるという基本姿勢の下に、これを行ったという点です。

ですから彼は、その働きの中心に主を畏れることを置いています。「私たちの神、主には、不正をすることも、えこひいきをすることも、賄賂を取ることもないからだ」（7節）と神をはっきり認識するように促しています。神がおられるのだから神を信じる、神が命じられるのだから神に従う、これが信仰の基本です。

読者は捕囚帰還後、国を再建しようとしていたイスラエルの民です。となれば、教会を建て上げようとしている私たちに対するメッセージとしては、やはり、神の栄光を現わすことを中心に教会を建て上げることを教えていると言えるでしょう。「主を恐れ、真実と全き心をもって、このようにおこなわなければならない」（9節）教会が、何かごたごたする時というのは、我欲がぶつかり合う時かもしれません。いつでも、神を中心に、主に対してどうであるか、という心をもって物事にあたることです。教会の中心は神です。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 19 Jehoshaphat’s conversion and reformation

1．Jehoshaphat’s Repentance

King Jehoshaphat of Judah escaped from the battlefield with his life. It is entirely by God’s mercy (18:31). Jehoshaphat, a man of weak judgment, almost died because of his foolishness, but he was rescued by a merciful God. Consider what that means. In other words, God is not picky about people. No one would try to save a dying person in a situation of their own making. But God is not. This is because God sees people as they really are.

The seer Hanani’s son Jehu urges repentance. It also tells us that God recognizes the fact that Jehoshaphat, even though he made the mistake of forming a wrong alliance, “had made up his mind and always sought God.” In the book of Revelation, God says to the Ephesian church, “I have a condemnation for you, for you have departed from your first love” (2:4). I know your deeds and your toil and patience” (2:2,3). In other words, God is the one who sees all the good as well as the bad. Therefore, God does not stigmatize people as failures when they fail. God calls us to repent for our mistakes. And it invites us to walk better. God is always watching over our whole life. Therefore, if you think that you have gone astray at any time, admit the fact, repent, and turn to God.

2．Jehoshaphat set his heart on the Lord

Now the repentant Jehoshaphat says, “From Beer-sheba to the hill country of Ephraim, he went out among the people and brought them back to the Lord, the God of their fathers.” Beersheba to Ephraim refers to the entire territory of Jehoshaphat. In other words, the king himself took the initiative to become an evangelist. Moreover, he appointed a judge. In order to strengthen his own work, he sets up his collaborators. It can be said that he specifically prepared the judicial profession. Jehoshaphat appointed Amariah, the priest, chief of religious affairs, and Zebadiah, the son of Ishmael, head of the House of Judah, chief of political affairs. In a sense, it can be said that he improved the bureaucracy and enriched domestic politics. What is important is that he did not merely institutionalize the nation, but that he did so based on the basic attitude of fearing God.

So he puts the fear of the Lord at the center of his work. “For with the Lord our God there is no injustice, no favoritism, no bribery” (v. 7). Believing in God because He exists, obeying God because He commands, this is the basis of faith.

The readers are the people of Israel who were trying to rebuild their country after returning from captivity. Therefore, as a message to those of us who are trying to build a church, we can say that it teaches us to build a church centering on revealing the glory of God. “You must fear the Lord and do this with a sincere and complete heart” (verse 9). When the church struggles, it may be when egoism clashes. At all times, it is to deal with things with a mind that is centered on God and how it is to the Lord. The center of the church is God.
