11章　分裂の意図

1．意図せざる結果

イスラエル王国は、北と南に分裂しました。そこでレハブアムは、イスラエルの北部を取り戻そうと18万の戦闘員を招集します。ところが、神の人シェマヤに主のことばがあり、戦闘中止を勧められるのです。レハブアムはこれに素直に従いました。彼は行軍を中止し、引き返しているのです。それまでは神の言葉に耳を貸すこともなく、人の助言に従ったレハブアムも、王国分裂の失敗によって学ぶところがあったのかもしれません。ただイスラエルの分裂は、「わたしが、こうなるように仕向けたのだ」（4節）とあるように、彼の判断の過ちというよりも、神のみこころとして起こった、ことでした。人は自分の一挙手一投足が、あらゆる結果を生むと考えがちですが、そうでもない、と言うわけです。

他方、イスラエル北側の王ヤロブアムは、イスラエルに住む祭司やレビ人を解任しています。それは、イスラエル北側の民が、エルサレム神殿と直結する彼らの影響を受けないようにするためでした。そして、国の体制を固めるために、彼らに代わって雄やぎや子牛を拝ませる偶像崇拝のための祭司が、一般の人々の中から任命されるのです。その結果、まことに主に仕えようとする祭司やレビ人は、偶像崇拝を避けて南側のユダの町へと移り住んで行きます。また、彼らに続いて、「イスラエルの全部族の中から、イスラエルの神、主を尋ね求めようと心に決めた者たちが、その父祖の神、主にいけにえを献げるためエルサレムに来た」（16節）とあります。こうしてイスラエル南側のユダには、宗教的な純粋さを求める者たちが集まるようになったのです。

神のみこころはそこにありました。つまり、王国の分裂は、単なる地理的・部族的な分離ではなく、宗教的な分離であったのです。一つの国が二つに分かれ、一方の国に、純粋に主に従おうとする者たちが集まるようになりました。歴代誌の著者は、ただ単に、ユダの王レハブアムの愚かな判断とその結末を描いているのではありません。著者の関心は、神のご計画を描きだすことです。神がレハブアムの愚かな判断を用いて、主を礼拝する真のイスラエルを選り分けたことを記録しているのです。

2．国は強くされた

5節から、レハブアムが建設した町の一覧が示されます。愚かな判断をしたはずのレハブアムが賢く事を行ったと記録されます。彼は防備の町を固め（5-10）、備蓄品を蓄え、子孫を増やし、身内で国の中枢を固めていきました。確かに彼は、策略的に行動したのです。しかし、イスラエルの国が堅固にされたのは、そのようなレハブアムの戦略を、神が後押ししたことによるものです（11:4、13、16、17）。

人間的な目で見れば、国が分裂し、縮小する、それを神が仕向けられたのだというのは、どうも理解しにくいものがあります。しかし、この書の読者は、捕囚から帰ってきた民でした。彼らは改めて自分たちがユダ族を中心とし、かつての栄光からさらに縮小している現実を感じていた者たちでした。そうであれば、このレハブアムの分裂と縮小のエピソードは、やはり彼らを力づけたに間違いはないのです。たとえ小さくなる現実があろうとも、そこには、主を尋ね求めようと心に決めた者たちが集められたからです。大切なのは、神を礼拝する場にいるあなたも、主を尋ね求めようと心を決めた者たちの中にあるという事実です。そしてたとえそれが小さな群れであっても、それは始まりに過ぎない、ということです。神は私たちの思いを超えた御業をなさるお方です。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 11 Intention to split

1. unintended consequences

The Kingdom of Israel split into north and south. Rehoboam summons 180,000 fighters to reclaim northern Israel. However, there is a word of the Lord to Shemaiah, the man of God, who advises him to stop fighting. Rehoboam obeyed this obediently. He has called off his march and is turning back. Until then, Rehoboam, who had not listened to the word of God and followed the advice of others, may have learned from his failure. However, the division of Israel was not due to an error in his judgment, as it says in verse 4, “I have caused it to be like this” (verse 4). People tend to think that every move they make has all the consequences, but that’s not the case.

On the other hand, Jeroboam, the chief of the northern side of Israel, dismissed the priests and Levites living in Israel. This was to prevent the people of northern Israel from being directly influenced by the Jerusalem Temple. And idolatrous priests will be appointed from among the common people to worship goats and calves on their behalf in order to establish the constitution of the nation. As a result, priests and Levites who truly wanted to serve the Lord moved away from idolatry and moved to the southern city of Judah. And after them they said, “From all the tribes of Israel, those who have resolved to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, will offer sacrifices to the LORD, the God of their fathers, in Jerusalem. I came to you” (verse 16). In this way, people seeking religious purity began to gather in Judah on the south side of Israel.

God’s will was there. In other words, the division of the kingdom was not simply a geographical or ethnic division, but a religious division. One nation was divided into two, and those who purely followed the Lord gathered in one nation. The Chronicles author does not simply describe the foolish judgment and consequences of Rehoboam, king of Judah. The author’s concern is to depict God’s plan. It records that God used Rehoboam’s foolish judgment to separate out the true Israel to worship the Lord.

2. the country was strengthened

Verse 5 gives us a list of the towns that Rehoboam built. It is recorded that Rehoboam, who should have made a foolish decision, acted wisely. He established a fortified town (5-10), stockpiled supplies, raised offspring, and established the center of the nation within his people. Certainly he acted strategically. However, it was God’s support of Rehoboam’s strategy that made the nation of Israel strong (11:4, 13, 16, 17).

From a human point of view, it is difficult to understand that God has caused the country to divide and shrink. But the readers of this book were people who had returned from captivity. They were people who once again felt the reality that they were centering on the tribe of Judah and that they were shrinking even further from their former glory. If so, then there is no doubt that this episode of Rehoboam’s division and shrinkage gave them strength. For there were gathered those who decided to seek the Lord, even though the reality was diminishing. The point is that when you are in the place of worshiping God, you are among those who have decided to seek Him. And even if it’s a small flock, it’s just the beginning. God is the one who does more than we can imagine. I hope you have a good day today.
