22章　ヨラムに続くアハズヤ

1．アハズヤの統治

「心を尽くして主を求めた王ヨシャパテ」と評される王の後継者は、ヨラムからアハズヤへ引き継がれました。ヨラムにしても、アハズヤにしても、彼らは神を求めない王でした。アハズヤは、42歳で王となったとありますが、これは明らかに写本上の誤りで、実際は22歳であった、とされます。となれば彼が、母アタルヤやアハブの家の助言に従い、アハブ家の者のように振る舞ったのは、若さのためであったのでしょう（3節）。アタルヤは神を畏れない北王国イスラエルの王オムリの孫娘、つまりアハブ王の娘です。つまり、彼女の母は主の預言者を皆殺しにしたイゼベルです。そんな母の下で育ったアタルヤが、神を畏れるはずもありません。アハズヤが母の影響を受けたとしても不思議ではありません。アハズヤは、戦争によって負傷したヨラムを見舞いにイズレエルに下った際に、イスラエル北王国に起こったクーデターに巻き込まれる形で、命を失いました。そして著者は、これが神から出たことである、とします。そしてこの事態にあって、アハズヤの母アタルヤは、王の一族を皆殺しにするのです。それは自分の身を守るためでした。

こうしてアハズヤとアタルヤがユダを支配した一時期、ユダは、イスラエル北王国にコントロールされる状況にあったのです。また、この世代に、ダビデの家系は、四度にわたる粛清の危機にさらされ（21:4、22:1、8、10）その存続が脅かされていきます。しかし、神がダビデと交わした契約は破られることはありませんでした。恐らく異母兄弟であったのでしょう、アハズヤの妹エホシェバが、アハズヤの子ヨアシュを盗み出し、隠し、王の一族は全滅を免れたのです。

2．望みえないわずかな希望に生きる

しばしば、権力者によって混迷した時代を生き延びなくてはいけない時があるものでしょう。神が存在するのなら、どうしてこんなことが起こるのか、時代が悪すぎて、神の祝福が一向に見えない暗黒が続く時代があります。しかし、神はいつまでも悪を見過ごされるわけではありません。神は裁き主であり、救いは彼岸のことのみではないのです。最も深い闇の時も、正しい支配を建て直すために働いている、目に見えない神の手があります。それを見極めるようにと、このエピソードは促しているのです。

確かに神の見えざる手の業によって、アタルヤの試みは挫かれました。しかし、列王記の記録と違って、歴代誌の著者が注目しているのは、神が興された祭司やレビ人たち、つまり神を畏れる人々の働きによって、神の側に立つ南ユダ王国の希望が守られていくことにあります。無力な赤児を匿いながら、その子どもが大きくなって宗教改革が行なわれ、ユダ南王国にまた神を畏れる正義が確立するなど、誰が信じ得たでしょうか。それは、いつ閉ざされる夢と化すかもしれないほんのわずかな希望であったはずです。しかし、彼らは、そこに望みをつないだのです。

けれども信仰とはそういうものでしょう。ほんのわずかな希望に賭けていく、いや望み得ないところにこそ望みを抱いていくことです。自分の打った手が、将来どのような望みになるのか、予測出来ない中で、信仰を働かせて、苦難の時代を生き延びていくことです。どのような状況下であっても、神を畏れ信仰をもって踏み始めたことは、神が完成させてくださることを、信じて歩む、闇を突き抜ける信仰に立たせていただきたいものです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 22 Ahaziah following Joram

1．Ahaziah’s reign

The king’s successor, described as “Jhoshaphat the king who sought the Lord with all his heart,” passed from Jehoram to Ahaziah. Both Joram and Ahaziah were godless kings. Ahaziah was said to have been king at the age of 42, but this is clearly a manuscript error and he was actually 22 years old. Perhaps it was because of his youth that he followed the advice of his mother Athaliah and the house of Ahab and acted like a member of the House of Ahab (v. 3). Athaliah is the granddaughter of Omri, king of the godless northern kingdom of Israel, that is, the daughter of King Ahab. Her mother is Jezebel, who killed all the prophets of the Lord. Athalia, who grew up under such a mother, could not fear God. No wonder Ahaziah was influenced by his mother. Ahaziah lost his life in a coup d’état in the Northern Kingdom of Israel when he went down to Jezreel to visit Jehoram, who had been wounded in the war. And the author assumes that this is from God. And in this situation, Ahaziah’s mother Athaliah slaughtered the king’s family. She did it to protect herself.

In this way, during the period when Ahaziah and Athaliah ruled Judah, Judah was under the control of the northern kingdom of Israel. Also, during this generation, the family line of David was threatened by four purges (21:4, 22:1, 8, 10). But God’s covenant with David was never broken. Ahaziah’s sister Jehosheba, who was probably a half-brother, stole Ahaziah’s son Joash and hid it, thus saving the king’s family from destruction.

2．Living with a little hope that can’t be hoped for

Often times, you will have to survive in times of turmoil by those in power. If there is a God, why is this happening? But God does not overlook evil forever. God is the judge, and salvation is not just for the other side. Even in the darkest of times, there is an invisible hand of God working to restore righteous rule. This episode urges us to find out.

Certainly, Atalya’s attempt was frustrated by the work of God’s invisible hand. However, unlike the record of Kings, the Chronicles authors focus on the God-raised priests and Levites, the God-fearing people, who, through the work of God-fearing people, made southern Judah stand on God’s side. It is about keeping the hopes of the kingdom alive. Who could have believed that a helpless baby would be sheltered and that the child would grow up to undergo the Reformation and establish God-fearing justice once again in the southern kingdom of Judah? It should have been just a faint hope that might turn into a dream that would be closed at any moment. But they held onto their hopes.

But faith is like that. It is to bet on the slightest hope, or rather, to hold onto hope where there is no hope. It is to survive the times of hardship by exercising faith in the midst of the unpredictability of what kind of hopes you will have in the future. No matter what the circumstances, I would like you to believe that what you have feared and started with faith in God will be completed by God, and that you will walk with faith that penetrates the darkness.
