15章　アサの宗教改革

1．アザルヤの預言

イスラエルは、神の民であり、神を礼拝する国民としての特色を持っていました。しかし実際に、彼らの礼拝は、唯一まことの神のみを礼拝するものではありませんでした。つまり、イスラエルには、アシェラ礼拝を始め、様々な偶像崇拝が蔓延していたのです。預言者は、過去を振り返って「まことの神もなく、教師となる祭司もなく、律法もありませんでした」と語ります。それは「イスラエルには王がなく、めいめいが自分の目に正しいと見えることを行っていた」（士師21:25）という士師時代のことを指しているのですが、アサの時代も同じようなものであった、と言いたいのでしょう。ただ、アサは、アザルヤの神の警告を受けて、「異教の祭壇と高き所を取り除き、柱を砕き、アシェラ像を打ち壊し、父祖の神、主を求めさせ、その律法と命令を行わせた」（14:3,4）。また、アシェラのために憎むべき像を造った王母マアカをその位から退けています。

大切なのは、このエピソードが、誰に語られたかです。つまりそれは、捕囚から帰って来たイスラエルの民を動機づけようとして書かれたものです。確かに彼らは、このエピソードの励まし「勇気を出しなさい。力を落としてはなりません」ということばを必要とする状況に置かれていました（ネヘミヤ記6:9）。彼らもまた神のことばに動機づけられて、主の祭壇を新しくするチャレンジを受けていたのです（エズラ3:3）。

2．アサの応答

「力を落として」（7節）の直訳は、「手を垂らして」です。それは、やりかけの仕事を放棄していないで、と意味です。「あなた方の働きには報いが伴っている」実に当時の読者への直球的なメッセージです。しかし、同時に今の私たちにも、歴史的裏付けをもって、語り掛けてくるものです。

8節、アサは「奮い立って」忌むべきものを除き去り、主の祭壇を新しくしました。「奮い立って」の直訳は「自らを強くして」です。改革は、やはり自らを強くし、心に力をためずにしてはできないことでしょう。そしてその力は、アサが預言者オベデの預言のことばを聞いて与えられたように、神のみことばなくして起こりえません。自分の中から出てくるものではありません。主のみことばにあって「奮い立つ」のです。

そして彼らは契約を結びました。これは、まさにシナイ契約を思い起こさせる、つまりイスラエルの民の出発点を確認させる出来事でした。申命記において主の契約が重視され、さらに、そののろいと祝福が確認されたように、彼らもまた、主と契約を結び、主を求めて生きる、その態度を明らかにしたのです。肩の力を落とさないことです。あきらめず取り組む働きが無駄になることはない、と神を信頼しながら物事を前進させ、彼らはその実を得ました。

確かに、神を信頼しながら一歩一歩出来るところから手をつけていくならば、時至って、それとわかるような大きな改革が起こりうるでしょう。もちろんそれでもなお「高き所はイスラエルから取り除かれなかったが」（17節）という、不完全さが残ることはあるでしょう。

変え難い人間の頑なさ、人間の愚かさがあります。しかしあきらめてしまえば、何も起こらないし、物事も変わりません。あきらめないことです。そして奮い立って取り組むなら、すべては無駄にはならないと、神に励まされながら物事を進め、神の業を期待してまいりましょう。そしてアサ王が集中したのは礼拝の回復です。自己満足的な自己流の礼拝ではなく神のことばに従う礼拝秩序の回復です。真の礼拝を回復させる営みは、必ず報われるのです。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 15 Asa’s Reformation

1．Azariah’s prophecy

Israel was a people of God and was characterized as a nation that worshiped God. But in fact, their worship did not consist of worshiping only one true God. In other words, various forms of idolatry were prevalent in Israel, including the worship of Asherah. Looking back on the past, the Prophet said, “There was no true God, no priests to teach, and no law.” It refers to the time of the Judges, when “Israel had no king, and each man did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). I would say that it was something like But Asa, being warned by the God of Azariah, said, “Take down the heathen altars and high places, break the pillars, tear down the Asherah idols, and seek the LORD God of your fathers to carry out his laws and decrees. (14:3, 4). He also dethroned Queen Mother Maacah, who made an abomination for Asherah.

The important thing is who told this episode. In other words, it was written to motivate the Israelites returning from captivity. Certainly they were in a situation that required the encouragement of this episode, “Take courage, do not lose strength” (Nehemiah 6:9). Motivated by the Word of God, they too were challenged to renew the altar of the Lord (Ezra 3:3).

2．Asa’s response

The literal translation for “lower your strength” (v. 7) is “hang your hands”. It means don’t give up on the unfinished business. “Your work will be rewarded.” This is a very direct message to readers at the time. However, at the same time, it also speaks to us today, backed by historical evidence.

In verse 8, Asa “was stirred up” to remove the abomination and to renew the altar of the Lord. The literal translation of “get up high” is “strengthen yourself”. Reform cannot be achieved without strengthening oneself and accumulating strength in one’s heart. And that power cannot come without the Word of God, just as Asa received the prophetic words of the prophet Obed. It doesn’t come from within. It is the Word of the Lord that will “be stirred up.”

And they made a deal. This was an event that reminded us of the Sinai covenant, that is, confirmed the starting point of the Israelites. Just as Deuteronomy emphasizes the covenant of the Lord and confirms its curse and blessing, they also made a covenant with the Lord and made clear their attitude of seeking and living for the Lord. Don’t let your shoulders drop. Trusting in God that their tireless efforts would not be in vain, they pushed things forward, and they reaped the fruit.

Certainly, if you trust in God and start from where you can, step by step, when the time comes, there will be big changes that you can see. Of course, even so, the imperfection may still remain: “Though the high places were not removed from Israel” (verse 17).

“There is human stubbornness and human stupidity that are hard to change.” But if you give up, nothing will happen and things will not change. Don’t give up. And if you work hard, everything will not be wasted. And King Asa concentrated on the restoration of worship. It is the restoration of the order of worship according to the Word of God, not the self-satisfied, self-styled worship. Efforts to restore true worship will always be rewarded.
