21章 反逆の王ヨラム
1．永遠の契約
ヨシャファテ王の後継者は、その長子ヨラムでした。ヨラムが王になると、ユダ南王国は一挙に危機的な状況を迎えます。というのもヨラムは、神の恵みによって勢力を増し加えると、兄弟たちや司たちを殺してしまうのです。彼は自分の王位を危うくする者を皆粛清し、排除したのです。
ヨラムが王となった期間は、8年間。おおよそBC848-841年であったと言われますが、それは暗澹とした時代でした。なぜそんなことになってしまったのか。その原因は、父ヨシャファテが結んだ、イスラエル北王国のアハブ家との間違った同盟関係に遡るものでした（18:1、19:1、20:35-37）。歴代誌の著者は、それが妻であるアハブの娘アタルヤの影響によることを指摘しています（6節）。こうして彼は主の目の前に悪を行いましたが、注目すべきは、そのようなヨラムに対する神の態度です。またそのように神を仕向けたダビデ契約です（7節）。つまり、そのような最悪のヨラムが、神に裁かれて終わりにならないのは「ダビデと結ばれた契約のゆえ」であった、ということです（2歴代21:7⇔2列王8:19比較参照）。神は「ダビデとその子孫に常にともしびを与えると約束された」その約束に忠実であったのです。
同じように、私たちが神に対して不誠実であり、悪者であるにも関わらず、私たちに神の祝福と守りがあるとしたら、それは、主なる神がイエス・キリストと結ばれた契約のゆえです。神がイエスと結ばれた契約は決して取り消されることのないもの、そして契約に忠実な神の御性質も決して変わることのないものです（ローマ8:39、ヘブル12:24、13:20）。なんとも、自身の罪深さを覚える者にとって、イエスの十字架の恵みの契約は感謝すべきもの、頼らざるを得ないものです。
2．永遠の契約の裏面
ところで神がダビデと結ばれた契約には、「わたしは彼の父となり、彼はわたしの子となる。彼が不義を行ったときは、わたしは人の杖、人の子のむちをもって彼を懲らしめる。」という内容も含まれていました（2サムエル7:14）。神は、ダビデ契約の故に、ヨラムを滅ぼすことを望みませんでしたが、ヨラムに「人の杖、人の子のむち」を加えられました。つまりエドムやリブナといった国がユダ南王国にそむき（8-10節）敵対する事態が生じたのです（10節）。さらに主は、ペリシテ人とアラビヤ人を奮い立たせて、敵対させられたとあります（16節）。彼が、ユダにある防備の町々を守っていた弟たちを疑い、虐殺したことは、意図せずして王国の弱体化招くことになりましたが、それは、神の裁きとして語られています。
それは、ヨラムが悔い改めるため。ですから、神は、預言者エリヤをもって、ヨラムに悔い改めの機会を与えられるのです。大切なのは、神の忍耐です。ただ契約に忠実だというのではなく、ヨラムに悔い改めの機会を与え、立て直そうとするために、契約を守られる神の忍耐です。しかしそんな神の心をわかろうともせず、ヨラムは、ますます神から離れ、神に反逆を重ねました（11節）。結局、ヨラムに残された道は、自ら蒔いた種を刈り取ること、滅びを刈り取ることでした（1歴代28:9、2歴代7:19-22）。
今日、イエスの十字架の契約に生きる者も同じです。神を信じながらも、神の心を思わず、神に生きることもない人生はあるものでしょう。神に罰せられてから気づく、あるいは、神に罰せられて後がなかったというのではなく、今自分が、神とどのような関係に生きているか、人間として正しい歩みをしているのか、よく弁えた歩みをさせていただきたいところです。では今日もよき一日であるように祈ります。

Chapter 21 Jehoram the Rebellious King
1. eternal covenant
King Jehoshaphat’s successor was his eldest son Jehoram. When Jehoram becomes king, the southern kingdom of Judah faces a crisis. For Jehoram, having increased his power by the grace of God, kills his brothers and his rulers. He purged and eliminated all who would jeopardize his throne.
Jehoram was king for eight years. Roughly 848-841 BC, it was a dark time. Why did this happen? The cause of this was his father Jehoshaphat’s false alliance with the Ahab family of the northern kingdom of Israel (18:1, 19:1, 20:35-37). The Chronicles writer points to the influence of his wife Ahab’s daughter Athaliah (v. 6). Thus he did evil in the sight of the Lord, but what is remarkable is God’s attitude toward Jehoram. It is also the David covenant that directed God in that way (verse 7). In other words, the reason why the worst Jehoram was protected was “because of the covenant made with David” (2 Chronicles 21:7 ⇔ 2 Kings 8:19).. God has been true to his promise, which he “promised always to give to David and his descendants a lamp.”
In the same way, if we are unfaithful and wicked to God, and yet we have God’s blessing and protection, it is the covenant that the Lord God made with Jesus Christ. Because of God’s covenant with Jesus can never be canceled, and God’s faithfulness to the covenant can never be changed (Romans 8:39; Hebrews 12:24, 13:20). Oh my God, for those who remember their own sinfulness, the covenant of grace of Jesus on the cross is something to be thankful for, something they can’t help but rely on.
2. The Reverse Side of the Eternal Covenant
But in the covenant that God made with David, it says, “I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men and the floggings inflicted by men. (2 Samuel 7:14). God did not want to destroy Jehoram because of the covenant of David, but he added ” the rod of men and the floggings inflicted by men” to him. In other words, countries such as Edom and Libnah rebelled against the southern kingdom of Judah (verses 8-10) and became hostile (verse 10). Furthermore, the Lord roused the Philistines and Arabs against each other (v. 16). His suspicion and slaughter of his brothers who guarded the fortified towns of Judah unintentionally led to the weakening of the kingdom, which was described as God’s judgment. It is so that Jehoram would repent. Therefore, God gave Jehoram an opportunity to repent through the prophet Elijah. The key is God’s patience. It is not just faithfulness to the covenant, but the patience of God who keeps the covenant in order to give Jehoram an opportunity to repent and rebuild himself. However, without even trying to understand God’s will, Jehoram turned away from God more and more and rebelled against God (verse 11). In the end, the only way left for Jehoram was to reap what he had sown, to reap destruction (1 Chronicles 28:9, 2 Chronicles 7:19-22).
The same is true for those living today in the covenant of the cross of Jesus. Even if you believe in God, there will be a life in which you do not think of God’s will and do not live in God. Rather than realizing it after being punished by God, or that there was nothing left after being punished by God, I often think about what kind of relationship I am living with God and whether I am walking the right path as a human being.
