33章　マナセとアモン

1．マナセの統治

マナセ王の生涯は実に興味深いものがあります。マナセは、55年という長期に渡って政権を維持しましたが、神のみこころにかなう王ではありませんでした。彼は「主の目の前に悪を行い、父ヒゼキヤが取り壊した高き所を築き治し、バアルのために祭壇を立て、アシェラ像を造り、天の万象を拝み、これに仕えた」（2、3節）と言い、さらに、アシェラ像を主の宮に築き、ベン・ヒノムの谷での儀式を復活させました（6節）。先のアハズ王に並んで、ユダ南王国最悪の王というべき存在でした。彼は父ヒゼキヤの信仰を何一つ受け継ぐこともなく、預言者のことばにも耳を貸さなかったのです。そんな彼を神が裁かれます。まさに彼は、痛い思いをせずに学べない者でした。彼は、鉤で捕らえられ、青銅の足かせにつながれて、バビロンへと引かれていくのです。

一国の王として、さぞ絶望的な状況であったことでしょう。もはや二度と自分の王宮に戻ることも、王権を復活することもあり得ない、全く将来に希望を失う状況であったはずです。しかし、その悩みの中で彼は悔い改めて、主に嘆願し、その父祖の神の前に大いにへりくだって神に祈ったと言います。アハズとは違う点です。神はマナセを王国に戻されました。そしてマナセは、この出来事を通じて、主こそ神であることを知るのです。

実に注目すべきはこの点です。神に逆らい、その逆鱗に触れるような者であっても、その者が悔い改めて、神を求めるならば、神はあわれみ深く取り扱われるのです。そんなのおかしいと思いますか？しかし、マナセに比べて自分も五十歩百歩、悪人に変わりはない、この神の恵みに甘える他はない、と思われる状況が私たちにもあるのではないでしょうか。そのような自分の現実に気づいて、恐る恐る神を求めた時に、神が受け入れてくださるというのは、大変感謝なことです。

2．マナセを思う神の心

もちろん、マナセが愛されて回復されることは、マナセにとっては幸いなことでしたが、それまで真面目に神を求めて、マナセに痛めつけられてきた人々にとっては、違和感を覚えることでしょう。神は、マナセの一人のために、主を熱心に呼び求める人々を犠牲にされる、そのように思われることです。神は、主を熱心に呼び求める人々を差し置いて、神を恐れないマナセによくされるのか、納得できないところもあるでしょう。しかしそれは、放蕩息子を受け入れられない、兄息子と同じ心境です。放蕩息子の帰りを待ちわび、ついにその千載一遇の機会を得た父親の気持ちを、理解しえない長男と同じなのです。人生には、神に愛されることを求める人生と神を愛することを求める人生の二つがあります。私たちは神に愛されることを願い求めてやまないものです。しかし、信仰に成長するならば、私たちは神の側に立ち、神を愛する人生を生きることを教えられるのです。ちょうど人が自分の子を育ててみて、初めて親の心がわかり、親になっていくようなものです。父なる神と同じ心を持って、罪人の回復を願うことを喜びとする人生に生きることは、信仰的に大人になればこそできることです。どんな罪人にも期待し、祈り続け、願う者となるのは、信仰の成熟の故なのです。

アモンについては、極めて短く述べられています。その生涯は、父マナセの悪を引き継ぐものであり、彼は悔い改めない王でした。結果その報いを受けることになります。悔い改めるべき時に悔い改めない王として彼は描かれています。悔い改める者を、神が見過ごされることはありません。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Chapter 33 Manasseh and Am

1．Manasseh’s reign

The life of King Manasseh is indeed an interesting one. Manasseh held his reign for a long period of fifty-five years, but he was not a godly king. “He did evil in the sight of the LORD, built and restored the high places that Hezekiah his father had torn down, built altars to Baal, made the image of Asherah, worshiped and served all the heavenly creatures” (verse2, 3), erected the statue of Asherah in the house of the Lord, and revived the ceremonies in the Valley of Ben Hinnom (verse 6). Along with King Ahaz, he was the worst king of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. He inherited none of the faith of his father Hezekiah, nor did he listen to the words of the prophets. God will judge him. Indeed, he was one who could not learn without pain. He was taken with hooks, bound with bronze fetters, and led to Babylon.

As the king of a country, it must have been a hopeless situation. There was no way he could ever return to his own palace or restore his sovereignty. But in his affliction he repented and supplicated his Lord and prayed to God with great humility before the God of his fathers. This is different from Ahaz. God brought Manasseh back to his kingdom. And Manasseh knows that the Lord is God through this event.

This is the point that really deserves attention. Even if a person rebels against God and touches his wrath, if he repents and seeks God, God will treat him with mercy. Do you think that’s funny? However, there may be situations in which we feel that we are a little different from Manasseh, that we are no different from villains, and that we have no choice but to rely on the grace of God. I am very grateful that God accepts me when I become aware of my reality and fearfully seek God.

2．The heart of God thinking of Manasseh

Of course, it was a blessing for Manasseh that Manasseh was loved and restored. It seems that God sacrifices those who earnestly call on the Lord for one of Manasseh. Some may not be convinced that God would favor Manasseh, who is not afraid of God, over those who earnestly call on Him. But it’s the same feeling as his older brother who can’t accept the prodigal son. He is the same as the eldest son who cannot understand the feelings of his father who has waited impatiently for the return of the prodigal son and who has finally had the chance to do so. There are two types of life: a life that seeks to be loved by God and a life that seeks to love God. We are desperate to be loved by God. But as we grow in faith, we are taught to stand on God’s side and live a life of loving God. It is just like a person who tries to raise his own child and understands the heart of a parent for the first time and becomes a parent. Having the same heart as God the Father, living a life that delights in praying for the recovery of sinners is something that can be done only when one becomes an adult in faith. It is because of the maturity of faith that we expect, pray, and wish for any sinner.

Amon is mentioned very briefly. His life inherited the wickedness of his father Manasseh, and he was an unrepentant king. As a result, he will be rewarded. He is depicted as an unrepentant king when he should have repented. God does not overlook those who repent. I hope you have a good day today.
